Every Encounter, a Weaving of Waves
Art begins with a single gesture - weaving thread or striking a drum - which then spreads outward like a wave. It invites us to imagine the lives of others, understand one another's cultures, and remember the traces of an era. This special, age-old language still acts as a force that connects us today, across different times and regions. For the past twenty years, the Korea Foundation (KF) has also practiced cultural diplomacy grounded in this very force. This exhibition commemorates the 20th anniversary of the KF Global Center, retracing our trajectory while also reflecting on how we can once again connect with one another within contemporary sensibilities. The wave became the most essential metaphor of cultural exchange. When different times and spaces, languages and sensibilities are woven together, they rise above a disconnected world and spread as an invisible resonance that unites us all.
The Thread Routes series by Kimsooja offers a non-narrative compilation of repetitive gestures and rituals of weaving from different regions of the world. Similarly, Yohan Hàn collects objects from liminal cultural spaces then recombines them, and reanimates bodily actions through performances, thereby bringing different traditions and religions together. Neither work is bound by the identity of a single region; instead, they propel cultural differences into new discourses, revealing the very core of human experience. While Kimsooja explores the philosophical thoughts embedded in the act of waving thread, Hàn creates a space where cultures from around the world resonate through the drum and bodily rituals. Seungean Cha's work adds another layer to the exhibition. She establishes a new foundation for painting by weaving textiles on a loom as a performative act, and subsequently dyeing and painting them. The present and the past, the East and the West intersect on one single canvas, thereby rendering familiar mages unfamiliar, disclosing new meanings within.
The three artists each selected their own media and mode of practice; however, they all present cultural differences, not as potential sources of separation but as sites of connection. The stage at the center of the exhibition space is a pivotal axis within this current. The stage is more than simply a site for performances; it is an open space where artists, diplomats, local people, and visitors from all around the world alike can share their experiences. Here, artistic expressions and diverse cultures resound together as a single wave. KF believes in the power of art that embodies culture, and we hope that this energy permeates deeply, through individuals, communities, regions, and ultimately the world.
김수자
Kimsooja (b. 1957)
Kimsooja first gained worldwide recognition in the 1990s when she drove a truck loaded with colorful bottari - bundles made from used clothes and fabrics - donated by immigrants from all around the world. Kimsooja employs diverse media to develop a unique language of conceptual art that reflects on life, the times, and the condition of art grounded in her characteristic contemplative gaze, self-reflective stance, and meditative practice. For the past two decades, Kimsooja lived and worked around the world, including New York, Paris, and Seoul, freely weaving geographic and symbolic borders. In 2025, she was promoted to 'Officier' rank of the French Order of Arts and Letters, further cementing her status as one of the leading contemporary Korean artists. Some of her most notable series - Bottari, A Needle Woman, To Breathe, and Thread Routes - meditate on coexistence and healing beyond national borders and cultures, as well as migration.

"Sensation evokes memory, and the body stitches time."
Yohan Hàn explores movement and the body, as well as the potential for trans-cultural communication through a diverse mode of practices including performance, sculptural objects, installation, and media. He engages in formal experimentation by combining traditional techniques and materials such as animal hides, and poses questions, within a neo-shamanistic context, regarding the relationship between the body and the world in a digital environment constantly saturated with information. Resonance and sensation are prominent themes in his practice, evoking and simulating primal human subjectivity and sensory awakening. Hàn recombines objects gathered at the borders of Europe and Asia, East and West, and the individual and the collective, visualizing polyphonic identities. In doing so, he invites the viewers to contemplate the possibilities of coexistence where cultures collide and overlap.

차승언
Seungean Cha (b. 1974)
Seungean Cha has developed a unique painterly language she calls "weaving painting," which is a fusion of textile arts with modern and contemporary abstract paintings from both Korea and the West. Cha explores the fundamental foundations of painting by weaving textiles on the loom, then dyeing and painting them. At first glance, her works resemble traditional Korean paintings; yet upon recognizing them as woven textiles, it becomes evident that her practice subverts the boundary between painting and textile.
Weaving is more than the artist's chosen mode of practice; it is a performative act of learning and embodiment, a device that reveals the liminal space where the active and passive intersect. Heterogeneous dimensions like the past and the present, East and West, painting and textile, visual and tactile, psychological and material are woven on the screen like the warp and weft on a loom. Familiar images are rendered unfamiliar, and new meaning and contemporary context are formed in the process.
Cha draws inspiration from American Abstract Expressionist and Minimalist artists such as Agnes Martin, Helen Frankenthaler, and Richard Tuttle, reinterpreting their work within a Korean context. Her latest works fuse precise weaving techniques and painterly expression, thereby appropriating and renewing the tradition of abstract painting, opening a new chapter in which different temporalities and histories intersect and take form.
