사라지는 얼음의 속삭임 WHISPERS OF VANISHING ICE
야니카 페르나 Jaanika Peerna오늘 우리는 빙하 붕괴, 해수면 상승, 생태계 변화 등 기후 위기를 일상적으로 마주한다. 사라지는 얼음은 단순한 자연 현상이 아니라 인류가 되돌릴 수 없는 지점에 다가서고 있음을 알리는 경고이자 행동의 신호다. 페르나는 2017년 이후 이러한 현실에 직접적으로 응답하며, 인간과 자연이 분리된 존재가 아님을 작품을 통해 강조해왔다.
어린 시절 피겨 스케이팅 선수를 꿈꾸었던 그는 얼음의 연약함과 투명함, 찰나에 오랫동안 매료되었다. 그는 빙하가 기후 변화를 기록해온 '지구의 기록물'이라는 점에 주목하며, 빙하의 소리에 반응하는 드로잉을 수행한다. 퍼포먼스에서는 얼음을 손에 쥐고 관객과 나누며, 얼음을 통해 찰나적이지만 깊은 감각적 경험을 만들어낸다.
극지방의 빙하는 빠르게 줄어들고 있으며, 일부 연구자들은 빙하가 생명의 기원을 품었을 가능성을 제기한다. 페르나는 이러한 사실과 상상력을 바탕으로 관람자가 환경 위기를 직시하고 변화의 가능성을 모색하도록 초대한다. 그의 작업은 단순한 경고를 넘어, 우리가 지켜야 할 가치와 기억해야 할 자연의 본질을 질문한다.
Jaanika Peerna is an Estonian-born visual and performance artist dealing with environmental issues, who has lived and worked in New York since 1998. Her all-encompassing medium is drawing, which she applies in two-dimensional works, sculptures, and performances. Through her minimalist visual language, Peerna uses the subject of ice to highlight the global climate crisis and the tipping points humanity has crossed in recent decades.
In today's world, we are constantly confronted with scientific data on melting glaciers, rising sea levels, and the broader impacts of climate change to wildlife and entire ecosystems. For Peerna, melting and disappearing ice have become symbols of our time — tangible traces of the crisis shaping our planet.
Since 2017, her work has taken a more direct approach to the environmental, social, and cultural dimensions of climate change, emphasizing how deeply humanity and the natural world are interconnected. Ice has fascinated Peerna since her childhood dream of becoming a figure skater, and she explores its fragility, transparency, and beauty through drawings inspired by glaciers and performances involving ice as both subject and material. She reads scientific studies on glaciers and their ability to preserve memory, listens to the sounds of melting glaciers, creates drawings in response, and invites audiences to hold and feel pieces of ice as if they were the last ones on Earth-transforming ice into an object of collective reflection.
As glaciers rapidly vanish, some scientists suggest that ice may have once been a source of life on Earth. Peerna seeks poetic ways to draw attention to this vanishing element and inspire awareness and action. Rather than being moralistic, her work emphasizes that we stand at a critical tipping point - one where transience, memory, and hope coexist, reminding us of our shared responsibility to preserve the most fundamental elements of nature.
