‘Koreana’ Summer Issue Spotlights Wave of Feminist Narratives in Korean Film

Korean filmmakers have recently gained attention at noted international film festivals. Several female directors with roots in indie filmmaking have debuted full-length features to favorable reviews, prompting expectations that they will become leaders in the Korean film industry.

The summer issue of Koreana, the KF’s comprehensive Korean arts and culture quarterly, looks into women’s stories told from fresh perspectives by female directors, and the current times that have made the emergence of such films imperative. The issue also features graphic novelist Keum Suk Gendry-Kim, who won the prestigious Harvey Award for Best International Book with Grass; embroidery master Choi You-hyun, who is credited with elevating Korean sewing arts; and chef Kordonias Nikolaos, who serves up Greek cuisine at his restaurant in Ikseon-dong in central Seoul. Koreana is available online at www.koreana.or.kr.
