Only Found in Indonesia: Komodo Dragons

In the distant past, the Earth was inhabited by huge dinosaurs. While all of them are now extinct, humans have been creating images and sculptures from dinosaur fossils to infer their appearance and sizes. On Komodo Island, located in southern Indonesia, there is an animal that resembles these dinosaurs. It is the Komodo dragon, with a stout body, rough scales, and a long tail.
The Komodo dragon is the largest lizard in the world, measuring a whopping 2.3m in length and weighing about 80kg. It has thick feet and sharp claws like a dinosaur. Komodo dragons easily hunt and eat deer, mountain pigs, as well as water buffalo, which are bigger than them. It is the top predator on the island, a source of fear for other animals. Although it has lived without a match in nature, humans have become a threat to its survival.
When the Komodo dragon became widely known in 1910, individuals where soon kept in zoos around the world. At the same time, their numbers began to dwindle as their habit at was increasingly destroyed to make room for human habitation. As a result, the Komodo dragon needed protection because it is a rare species that only lives on Komodo Island. Accordingly, UNESCO has listed Komodo National Park, home to the largest number of Komodo dragons, as a World Heritage Site, and the International Union for Conservation of Nature has designated it as an endangered animal.Because the Indonesian public wishes to cherish and protect this vulnerable species, the animal is now considered a national symbol. Don’t forget to check out this charismatic creature on your next visit to Indonesia!
