A Tasty Class on ASEAN Cooking

ACH REVIEW

A Tasty Class on ASEAN Cooking

Oh Yu-jin, Teacher, Sejeong High School

We participated in the ASEAN Cooking Class because it was a great opportunity to gain a new perspective on ASEAN culture through cooking. We learned about ingredients used in Brunei Darussalam, Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand, and how to cook with them. It inspired my students to broaden their views. They earnestly took notes on the chefs’lectures and listed the capabilities required to become a chef. After returning to school, I had the idea that students could use what they learned for creative cooking and cooking contests. The ASEAN Cooking Class also made us consider students’future employment abroad, instead of limiting them to working in Korea. Should there be another such cooking class at the ACH, I plan to apply for it again.

Student 1

I didn't have an opportunity to try Thai food before, and it was helpful to learn how to cook it and really fun to eat it. The class got me interested in cuisines from other countries, aside from Korea, China, Japan, and the West. It was so satisfying that I would like to take it again.

Student 2

By observing them cook, I learned a lot from the attitudes of the chefs who have been in the restaurant industry for a long time. The Q&A session was particularly helpful. If there’s another opportunity, I’d like to experience more of this.

Student 3

I wasn't familiar with Singaporean food before, and when I tried it, I found it both simple and tasty. The cooking class was a special and interesting experience. It was my first time making Thai food. It was fun and, more than anything, delicious. I am definitely willing to try it again, if there’s another chance.

Student 4

Since it's not common to have an opportunity to learn about Thai food, the ASEAN Cooking Class was a great experience. I loved that we got to learn many things about Thai cuisine.
