ROK-U.S. Strategic Forum 2020

On June 24–26, the fifth Korea-US Strategic Forum will be held online by the KF and the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), a leading US think tank.

Held annually since 2016, the forum has established itself as a 1.5-track conference that brings together policy-related officials and academics from major fields such as politics, diplomacy, security, and national defense. Through open and closed-door discussions, experts from the two allies are able to enhance mutual understanding about policy direction, seek new ways of cooperating, and improve their future-oriented bilateral relationship.

At the upcoming meeting, participants will discuss the denuclearization and maintenance of peace on the Korean peninsula; the global economy under the influence of the COVID-19 pandemic; and strengthening bilateral efforts in the fields of artificial intelligence, space science, and other areas. Going one step further to build upon the usual theme of diplomacy and security, this year’s forum will also feature in-depth discussions on topics such as transnational and unconventional security issues.

The forum will be attended by over 30 distinguished figures from both countries. Among the Korean participants will be Ko Yoon-joo, Director-General of the North American Affairs Bureau at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Yoon Young-kwan, former foreign minister; and Chung Chul, senior vice president of the Korea Institute for International Economic Policy. The American side will be represented by John Hamre, president and CEO of CSIS; Ambassador Mark Lippert, senior advisor to the CSIS Korea Chair; Randall Schriver, former Assistant Secretary of Defense for Indo-Pacific Security Affairs in the U.S. Department of Defense; Victor Cha, professor at Georgetown University; Sue Mi Terry, senior fellow at CSIS; and others.
