(5 Ringgit Malaysian Banknote)

A rare species of bird lives in peninsular Malaysia. This is the rhinoceros hornbill, a bird with a black body and a long beak. Designated as the country’s state bird, the hornbill is so prized by the Malaysian people that it appears on the 5 ringgit banknote.

A rhinoceros hornbill is also featured in the crest of Sarawak. The indigenous Dayak people of Borneo, including in the state of Sarawak, consider it the best of all birds. The 13 feathers that form the wings symbolize the 13 states of Malaysia.
