The pattala consists of 24 bamboo keys and is played with two mallets. It is one of several instruments used in musicals and performances in Myanmar. At first glance, its form is similar to the Western marimba, but it is made of a slightly softer material.

The saung has a distinct, boat-shaped body and a long neck, connected with 13 to 16 silk strings. The tone it produces is rounder and softer than a Western harp. Pitch and volume are adjusted with the left hand, while notes are played with the right hand.
