2021 Spring Issue of ‘Koreana’ Published - Webtoons Offer the Possibility of a New Hallyu

Korean webtoons are emerging as a new genre of Hallyu content, enjoying enormous popularity not only in Asia but also in North America and Europe. The spring issue of Koreana, the KF’s quarterly about Korean arts and culture, traces how Korean webtoons have dominated the global market and established Korea as the leader of this form of digital comic over the past 20 years.

The magazine features webtoon artists and content well-known at home and abroad, and explores the possibility that webtoons may expand their immense influence over popular culture as a whole. The cover story on webtoons is followed by articles on Sehando, or “Winter Scene,” Kim Jeong-hui’s painting that became a national treasure after being donated to the National Museum of Korea; jazz vocalist Na Yoon-sun, who has released a creative “Arirang” album through collaboration with other musicians in Korea and abroad; and French-born pansori singer Laure Mafo, who chose the traditional Korean narrative singing genre as a career after coming across the pansori work Chunhyangga. Koreana is available in print and online: www.koreana.or.kr.
