‘Koreana’ Spring Issue: Experiments and Challenges in Traditional Music
Musicians such as Leenalchi, Jambinai, and Haepaary, who new styles of traditional Korean music
(gugak) or combine it with varied other genres, are attracting attention at home and abroad. The spring
issue of Koreana, the KF’s comprehensive arts and culture quarterly, highlights the expanding territory
of today’s gugak, which reflects contemporary senses through diverse experiments. The issue also features
Korean words that have been newly added to the Oxford English Dictionary; Chae Kyung-sun, the art
director who designed the unique sets for Netflix’s global hit Squid Game; and a large-scale
retrospective exhibition of the late Choi Wook-kyung, a famous figure of Korean abstract painting.
