Masks are exquisite works of sculptural art and historical objects rich in symbolism. As the first Korean museum specializing in these facial covers, the Hahoe Mask Museum collects and displays masks from home and abroad, including those used for Hahoe Byeolsingut Tallori, or the Mask Dance Drama of Hahoe. More than 800 objects from around 50 countries as well as Korean masks are displayed at the museum’s five exhibition halls.

The first hall showcases Hahoe, Cheoyong, and other Korean masks. It features details on masks worn for Bukcheong Saja Noreum, the Lion Mask Dance performed in Bukcheong, South Hamgyeong Province, and Bongsan Mask Dance of Bongsan, North Hwanghae Province both regions in present-day North Korea and masks and related games that originated in other areas.

The second and third halls exhibit Asian masks, including masks from China featuring lions and symbols wishing for good fortune; Barong and Rangda dance masks from Bali and other parts of Indonesia; and versions from from India, Inner Mongolia, Japan, Malaysia, Nepal, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, and Thailand.

The fourth and fifth halls feature masks from around the globe and the fifth hall hosts exhibitions. Among the masks on display are those from France, Italy, and nations in South America and Africa. The halls thus provide a wonderful opportunity to appreciate, compare, and learn about masks from all over the world in one place.
