4th Korea-China-Japan Baduk Contest for Youth Exchange

On September 3, the fourth Baduk (go) Contest for Youth Exchange was held online in Shanghai as an international event to promote exchanges among Busan (Korea), Shanghai (China), and Nagasaki (Japan), and improve the ability of young players in this ancient game of strategy. Shanghai hosted the inaugural competition in 2018, while Nagasaki hosted the second in 2019 and Busan the third in 2021.

One squad each from Busan and Nagasaki and two from Shanghai competed in this year's contest in the team match. Each team had five members, comprised of elementary, middle, and high school students, who competed on the website “Tygem.”

The municipal governments of Busan and Shanghai and the government of Nagasaki Prefecture have conducted exchanges in diverse fields. Busan and Shanghai signed a sister city contract in 1993; Busan and Nagasaki established friendly and cooperative ties in 2014; and Shanghai and Nagasaki signed a treaty on friendship and exchange relations as early as 1996. Departing from the usual formats of bilateral exchange, the three regions have sought multilateral exchange over the past few decades that are centered on cities that have sister/friendship contracts. The contest is expected to not only upgrade youth competitiveness in baduk but also encourage a globally-sensitive mindset through increased interest in one another’s cities.
