Taking in Autumn, and a Palace, in Hanbok

On September 28, Korean and foreign volunteers clad in Hanbok, the traditional Korean costume, breathed in the scent of autumn at Changdeokgung Palace in central Seoul, all thanks to the KFVN Education and Publicity Team. The day’s program was open to all volunteers who had participated in the team’s activities so far this year, offering a welcome respite from their busy daily routines. Participants enjoyed the scenic beauty of the palace, which presented a marked contrast to the urban sights and sounds just outside.
Sonia, who joined the team’s activities as a foreign volunteer last August, enjoyed a picnic with her husband and daughter. Ezgi Darici, another foreign volunteer, said, “I’ve lived in Korea for the past six years but have never visited a palace wearing Hanbok. I thank the KFVN for this opportunity.”
The volunteers selected and put on Hanbok and accessories of their choosing and explored the main palace on their own before reuniting for a group tour of the palace’s Huwon, or rear garden. The garden is accessible only on guided tours to ensure the preservation of cultural heritage; reservations must be made in advance. The secret garden was so quiet and natural that the participants said they could not believe it was in the heart of Seoul.
Sophal Hong, a foreign volunteer and long-time KFVN member, said, “Volunteering with the KFVN has given a fresh energy to my daily life, and this kind of cultural experience adds fun to my weekend. I’ll be actively taking part in volunteer activities in the future.”
