KF Supports Korean Artist Invited to Venice Biennale

The Korea Foundation is providing support to artist Jeong Geumhyung, who will present her works at the International Art Exhibition of the 59th Venice Biennale, which runs from April 23 to November 27.

Debuting in 1895, the event is one of the world’s three top biennales and dubbed the “Olympics of the art world.” In Venice, a broad range of artists exhibit their works, which interpret common themes and reflect the artistic trends of the times.

This year's theme, "The Milk of Dreams" is derived from the eponymous picture book created by surrealist painter Leonora Carrington for her child. Based on the numerous transformations and surrealistic imagination presented in her book, the biennale will deal with three thematic subjects: representation of bodies and their metamorphoses, relationship between individuals and technology and connection between bodies and Earth.

Jeong will deliver her unique interpretation of the second subject through a one-person puppetry focusing on the relationship between sculptures that embody dismantled pieces of the human body and the body itself.

Viewers are expected to consider the three subjects and what differentiates humans from other creatures. They can also imagine becoming other beings through transformations and metamorphoses of their bodies and seek coexistence with Earth by reviewing the established world order and system.
