In Korea, Laos became known through variety shows as a haven of activities in which visitors can engage. In addition to these activities, Laos has an ancient capital where one can see the past, present, and beautiful nature all at once.
Luang Prabang in northern Laos was the capital of the Lan Xang Dynasty and enjoyed 800 years of prosperity. With a long history of Buddhism, the city is home today to over 30 Buddhist temples and numerous historic sites. Before its destruction during invasion by China, Luang Prabang had 65 such temples, which attests to the importance and influence of religion in the lives of its citizens.

The ceremony of mendicancy at dawn is a unique sight that vividly demonstrates faith in Laos. Mendicancy - the act of eating food and wearing clothes received as alms - is one of the 12 duties of Buddhist practitioners. The sight of monks in orange robes performing a long-established ritual in silence in the middle of a modern city on a dusky morning brings one back to the past and creates a feeling of solemnity. As the monks walk down a set path, local residents and tourists lining the streets put food or money in their bowls. This has been practiced since the time of the Lan Xang Kingdom, and more than 90 percent of Luang Prabang residents participate on a daily basis.

The most famous natural attraction in the area is the nearby Kuang Si Falls, which reaches a height of 60 meters. Due to its lime content, the water is emerald in color and cascades beautifully in layers. The water volume varies between the dry and wet seasons, creating a different atmosphere at different times of the year.

At the center of Luang Prabang’s old quarter is Mount Phousi, which means “sacred hill.” With a height of about 100 meters, the hill is considered a religious and spiritual pillar by the locals. After climbing the 330 steps to the top, visitors are rewarded with the sight of a 28-meter-tall golden stupa and a panoramic view of the city. The scarlet sunset over the Mekong River and the surrounding mountain ridges is especially astonishing.

After dark each day, a 700-meter stretch of Sisavangvong Road in the old quarter hosts a huge night market. There’s a food court at the square at the market’s entrance, which greets shoppers with a variety of food and lively people that stimulate the senses. The shops sell clothes, accessories, and souvenirs, and the handicrafts on offer are often embroidered in unique Lao patterns and colors. In the endless lights of the night market, the bustling crowd and haggling tourists bring life and energy to Luang Prabang.

From dawn to late night, the city is filled with unique attractions at every hour. Although relatively unknown compared to the popularity of Vang Vieng, Luang Prabang comes across as far less artificial than other tourist sites. It’s a highly recommended destination where you can experience the authentic local atmosphere of Laos.
