When you’re tired or having a hard time, listening to music might help you regain energy. As you hum lyrics that cheer you on or enjoy exciting beats and melodies, you can find new strength. “Munnaery Vaalibaa,” written in 1966, is one such song that empowers people. In Tamil, the title means “Move forward, youth.” The song was written to inspire young people to lead the future not long after Singapore became independent as a city-state. If you want to listen to this upbeat music, scan the QR code. You can watch a performance of the song on the KF ASEAN Culture House’s YouTube channel.

The erhu looks so similar to the Korean haegeum that images of both instruments show up when searching for either one. While the haegeum has a sharper sound, the erhu uses metal strings, and the bow and body of the instrument can be separated. As with other string instruments, it is played by stroking the strings with a horsehair bow.

The sheng is a wind instrument played by blowing into 32 metal pipes with one’s mouth. The number 32 might conjure up the image of a large instrument, but the sheng

is small enough to put on one’s lap. It produces a heavy bass sound and can play two to three notes simultaneously.
