[KF Culture Walk] Movie Recommendation by Assistant Director Lee Eun Ji, Invitation and Fellowship Department. ‘Hidden Figures’(2016)
‘Hidden Figures’ (2016)
Director: Theodore Melfi
Stars: Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, Janelle Monáe
Hidden Figures is based on the true story of three talented African American female scientists at NASA in the 1960s, when the United States and the then Soviet Union were locked in a fierce competition over space exploration. The three protagonists suffer from various forms of racial discrimination that are hard to imagine today, forced to use Black-only bathrooms far from their offices and barred from sharing the office coffeepot. However, they do not succumb to such discrimination, overcoming the limitations by demonstrating outstanding capability.
Six decades have passed since the 1960s, but racial discrimination has yet to disappear as evidenced by the death of George Floyd in the United States last year and the indiscriminate assault of a Korean American man in his 20s in LA’s Koreatown a short while ago. However, if we do not give in to discrimination and prejudice and instead stand tall as bravely as the women of Hidden Figures do, the world we live in will become warmer and safer than it is now. I recommend this movie with such hopeful expectations in mind.
