Koreana’s Winter Issue Highlights K-dramas

Director Hwang Dong-hyuk’s blockbuster Squid Game has rekindled global interest in Korean TV series, or K-dramas. In the past, Korean romantic series enjoyed great popularity mostly among female viewers in Asia, but newer works of different styles and genres from the Land of Morning Calm have now made inroads in the US, the UK, and many European countries as cultural content with universal appeal.

The winter issue of Koreana, the KF’s comprehensive quarterly on Korean art and culture, delves into the characteristics and attractions of these new K-dramas and their differences from traditional series. The magazine also features articles on Seoul Metropolitan Theatre Director Koh Sun-woong; the animated film Chun Tae-il: A Flame That Lives On, which won the Contrechamp Jury Distinction Prize at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in France; and gimbap, a dried seaweed rice roll filled with rice and ingredients that grabbed global attention through the latest hit K-drama Extraordinary Attorney Woo. The issue will also be available online (www.koreana.or.kr).
