Experiencing Korean Culture with Global Citizens

On November 18, Korean and foreign volunteers jointly experienced Korea’s kimjang culture at Mirinae Village in Anseong-si, Gyeonggi-do. Kimjang is a time-honored Korean custom of preparing kimchi for the winter. The participants made kimchi with excitement and smiles, and after the kimjang was complete, they had a great time tasting the fresh kimchi they had made and trying kimchi pancakes.
After a lunch of Korean food, the group moved to Seoknamsa Temple, which is well-known as the filming location of the popular TV series Guardian: The Lonely and Great God. They took a walk around the temple, enjoying the fresh air and wonderful scenery. It was quite cold, but there were a surprising number of tourists who were there to explore the beautiful surroundings.
The Seoknamsa tour was followed by taking in a Korean traditional performance at the Anseong Namsadang Performance Hall in Anseong. Though it was cold outside, the audience watched the Baudeogi performance from warm, heated seats. Baudeogi was the name of a Joseon-era female leader of the Anseong Namsadang troupe, a grassroots group of entertainers, comedians, theatrical performers, and acrobats. They also had a fun opportunity to join in the performance.
