[Review] Korean-Style Mural Village Completed in Vietnam

The KF spent three weeks in May expanding Tam Thanh Mural Village in the Vietnamese city of Tam Ky. Tam Thanh became a popular tourist spot after the KF’s global contribution program turned the neighborhood into a Korean-style mural village in 2016. Once a quiet fishing village, Tam Thanh now attracts more than 500 daily visitors on weekdays and 2,000 each weekend. The Tam Ky People’s Committee, impressed by the positive change brought by Tam Thanh, had asked the KF to return and expand and complete the mural village.
On May 9, the KF dispatched five mural painters from the Lee Gang Jun The Institute of Public Design to decorate the village walls. They were assisted by five Korean youth volunteers, a score of Vietnamese fine arts teachers, and local villagers in the course of beautifying the walls of the homes and buildings in the neighborhood, battling against the seaside heat and humidity. The team was aided in its work by Noroo Paint and Coatings, who supported the project by donating half of the needed paint. After the expansion work was completed, the KF held three rounds of workshops to train local residents in maintenance and other matters related to the mural decorations.
About a dozen new medium- and large-sized murals were added while the existing paintings underwent repairs, further increasing Tam Thanh’s appeal as a tourist destination. Those involved hope that the upgrade will help the village attract even greater numbers of visitors, standing as a symbol of Korea-Vietnam friendship for many years to come.
