[Review] KF Holds 1st Public Diplomacy Week

The 1st Public Diplomacy Week, Korea’s first landmark event on public diplomacy, was held at Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) in Seoul on November 1–3.
More than 60,000 Korean and foreign residents attended the event. Under the motto “It’s Time for Public Diplomacy!”, the 3-day “PD Week” featured a host of events, including conferences, presentations of best practices of public diplomacy, career outreach sessions and cultural performances, as well as exhibition booths of over 30 public diplomacy organizations.
At the “Public Diplomacy Talk,” various activities by public diplomacy actors were presented. Speakers included the Italian-born local celebrity Alberto Mondi who shared tips on how to properly and efficiently introduce Korean culture to global audiences. In addition, public diplomacy institutions from Canada, Ecuador, Singapore, and Turkey shared outstanding achievements of their public diplomacy activities and discussed possible areas of cooperation with one another.
On November 3, career outreach sessions were prepared for young people seeking jobs in the public diplomacy sector. Young job seekers expressed their satisfaction over having the rare opportunity to hear first-hand experiences of public diplomacy practitioners and being able to learn about specific qualifications and skillsets required for positions at public diplomacy institutions.
The KF plans to hold the Public Diplomacy Week annually to raise both Koreans and foreign residents’ understanding of public diplomacy and introduce latest trends and initiatives. As Dr. Nancy Snow mentioned at her keynote speech, the Korea Foundation will strive to make the Public Diplomacy Week Korea’s leading public diplomacy event.
