[Review] Korea-China conference celebrating the centennial of the Korean Provisional Government was held in Shanghai

A Korea-China conference celebrating the centennial of the Korean Provisional Government was held in Shanghai, China, on February 26, co-hosted by the KF, the Korean Political Science Association, and the Sungkyun Institute of China Studies at Sungkyunkwan University in Seoul. It was sponsored by the Korean Presidential Commission on the Centennial Anniversary of the March 1st Independence Movement and the Korean Provisional Government.
On the Chinese side, the conference was jointly organized by both the Institute of International Studies and the Center for Korean Studies of Fudan University as well as the Shanghai Institute of Korean Studies. The conference drew keen attention as it brought academics of the two countries to Shanghai only a few weeks before the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the Korean Provisional Government in the city, which falls on April 11.
Under the theme of “The 100-Year Journey towards Modernity and Seeking a New Peace Regime,” the conference proceeded over three sessions: “The Internationality of the March 1st Independence Movement,” “The Korean Provisional Government as the Prototype of Korean Democracy,” and “The Possibility of a Northeast Asia Peace Regime.”
Political scientists and historians representing China and Korea made presentations and engaged in passionate discussions during the one-day meeting. The Chinese participants included experts in subjects related to the Korean Peninsula and Fudan University scholars well-known within the academic circles of Korea: Shi Yuanhua, Professor at the Center for Korean Studies; Su Changhe, Director of the Institute of Global and National Governance; and Feng Yujun, Vice Dean of the Institute of International Studies. Owing to the Chinese specialists, attendees of the conference had a chance to hear candid views on the prospects for a peace regime in Northeast Asia.
In his opening remarks, KF President Sihyung Lee shared his own hope that Chinese and Koreans would soon sweep the yard and wash the windows of a shared house of Northeast Asia marked by peace and prosperity, referring to the patriot Kim Koo’s wish to not die before seeing Korea become independent and create its own government, and then sweep its yard and wash its windows.
