TV Series Recommendation by Senior Program Officer Kim Nakyo
Space Force
Space Force is a Netflix series in which the United States establishes a military space unit separate from the Air Force. The series stars Steve Carell, who has long stood out in the genre of comedy both as a director and actor. He also participated in the production of the show.
Protagonist Mark Naird has devoted his entire life to the Air Force when he is finally promoted to four-star general. However, though he expects to become Air Force Chief of Staff, he is appointed to lead the new Space Force and carry out a presidential order to station US military on the moon instead. The series begins as he leaves Washington, D.C., for a Space Force base in the wild plains of Colorado.
In a totally unfamiliar environment and with haughty experts and wayward subordinates, Mark fulfills his mission of launching a satellite and experimenting with lunar settlement. He wrestles with several internal problems as well as ceaseless adversaries from the outside, including an Air Force general with whom he has long maintained a feud, the budget-controlling Capitol Hill, and the Chinese military, which boasts formidable power in space.
It may take some time for viewers to understand the protagonist and his strange indulgences. However, he is a warm-hearted leader who easily distinguishes what is important from what is not, and has the ability to figure out others well. Once you understand him, you won’t be able to stop laughing at the series’ conflicts and solutions, clever wordplay, and absurd humor. Also interesting are the show’s sarcastic commentary on powerful figures such as the US president, a four-star general, and a congressman; the incongruity of scientific theory and its actual practice; and the US-China power struggle.
Comedy is a genre that points out the absurdity of humanity and our social contradictions, allowing us to laugh them away and arrive at a happy ending. I hope viewers will be able to relieve their stress, even just for a moment, by laughing at Space Force’s sarcastic references to reality and enjoying the characters’ warm approach to solving problems.
