Special Buncheong-sagi Exhibition Catalogue to be Published Online

In October 2020, the KF and the Gana Foundation for Arts and Culturesuccessfully hosted a special online exhibition exploring the beautyof buncheong-sagi, or buncheong ware, titledThe Essence of Korean Aesthetics: Ancient and ModernBuncheong-sagi. The catalogue from the exhibition will be released in the form ofan online e-book.

The catalogue will introduce in both Korean and English the beauty ofKorean buncheong-sagi by featuring around 90 ceramic works,including a flattened buncheong ware bottle that sold for USD3,132,500 at Christie’s New York, a notable fine art auction house.The flattened buncheong ware bottle, officially namedBuncheongsagijohwachusangmunpyeonbyeong, is decorated withwhite slip and incised on one side with an abstract design and on theother with the image of a fish, which, despite being belly-up, appearsto be swimming through strong waves.

The special online exhibition was broadcast on the KF YouTube channelwith introductions in English, German, and Russian, and attracted150,000 views from around the world.

The upcoming online publication of the catalogue is expected torekindle interest in the exhibition and share the appeals of Koreanart with more people globally.
