International Exchange Project Brings Korean Songs to New Jersey

On November 23, 2022, William Paterson University (WPU) in New Jersey presented a concert of Korean songs, including “Spring Girl” and “Longing for Geumgangsan,” at the “Korean-Language Song Evening,” jointly organized by WPU and Cheongju University in Korea. For the event, students from the 2022 spring semester were recruited for a pilot course that was offered in July and August.

First, Prof. Geon-ah Choi and two students from Cheongju University provided 1:1 online tutoring for Korean pronunciation for WPU professors and students who were to sing at the planned concert. In the fall semester, two dozen Cheongju University students then tutored 25 students in New Jersey. At Cheongju University, Prof. Choi conducted an online workshop on Korean language teaching methods and introduced useful materials for students. Meanwhile, at William Paterson University, ethnic Korean professors like Jee-hyun Lim, Carrie E. Hong, Keum-jae Park, and Angie Yoo held a students’ workshop for the project.

The exchange project, carried out at a time during which many people feel isolated due to the ongoing measures to curb the COVID-19 pandemic, successfully promoted Korean language and culture through online tutoring. The two universities began student exchanges in 2021 and hope to expand their interactions.
