The Slovak Theatre Posters

On November 4–23, 2016, the KF Gallery will present The Slovak Theatre Posters exhibition, which features 60 distinctive posters produced with vivid graphic arts that express various aspects of the theater, culture, and society of Slovakia in the early 20th century.
In the 1950s, Slovak theater posters underwent a groundbreaking transformation as a result of Čestmír Pechr, a graphic artist who made posters for the Slovak National Theater for over 30 years. This unique genre was further enhanced throughout the 1970s by numerous artists and theater professionals. Following the “Velvet Revolution” of November 1989, which ushered in a peaceful transition from communist rule, people started to embrace freedom of expression and artistic creativity in earnest. The theater posters of that time widely utilized bold and original designs. While offering glimpses of Slovak culture, the posters also contained traces of artists’ attempts at creative expression during a time of political oppression, and became integral elements of the Slovak cityscapes.
The exhibition offers visitors a chance to view the distinctive atmosphere and sentiments of the Eastern European region and people. It is a special opportunity to explore the joys and sorrows of the Slovak people through their visual artworks and societal perspective. The exhibition will also feature “Magical Slovakia,” a showcase of photos of Slovakian landscapes by prominent Slovak photographer Ladislav Struhár.
