Photographic Images and Matter: Japanese Prints of the 1970s

The KF Gallery’s first exhibit of 2017, Photographic Images and Matter: Japanese Prints of the 1970s, will run from February 10 to March 24.
Modes of expression in Japanese prints began to undergo significant changes with the works of Tetsuya Noda, who presented silk-screen prints made from family portraits at the Sixth Tokyo International Print Biennale in 1968. It was at this time that print art began to overlap with modern art in terms of technique and theme. The 1970s in particular saw a proliferation of prints in the style of Noda’s works made using photos and film, marking the start of a heyday in the use of such experimental techniques.
The upcoming exhibit will feature over 50 works by 14 print artists, including Tetsuya Noda and Lee U-fan, providing a closer look at the forms of expression that characterized Japanese prints, particularly during their golden age in the 1970s. Also on display will be works that exemplify the transition toward the use of images and materialism, allowing visitors to explore the trends that have shaped modern Japanese art.
In conjunction with the exhibit, two silk-screening workshops as well as a lecture (in conjunction with the KF Global Academy) will also be held. In addition, the KF has prepared special events for visitors on Valentine’s Day and White Day.
More information on the exhibit and lecture can be found at the KF homepage (www.kf.or.kr) and the KF Gallery’s official Facebook account (www.facebook.com/koreafoundationgallery).
