KF Internship Report from New York

I am an intern at the C.V. Starr East Asian Library of Columbia University. With the arrival of May, New York shed the last remnants of its winter chill and welcomed the early summer warmth. The campus was filled with festivities for the whole month as commencements and many other events were held here and there. I was also able to experience the commemoration of Memorial Day, a US federal holiday, for the first time.

In May, I finished a book cataloging project that I had worked on for over four months. I felt proud as I gazed upon all the empty shelves standing before me that had once been full of books. Next, I began cataloging Korean classical film scenarios. This requires me to create original catalog records of the scenarios, so it takes more time and efforts than the book cataloging. After this task is complete, I will catalog comics. It is not easy to classify and list all the books, scenarios, and comics, but it is a great opportunity to learn.

Though I am busy with my work at the library, I have made time to participate in various events on campus. I congratulated the graduating students and enjoyed a variety of East Asian food when I was invited to the graduation party held by the university’s Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures. I also attended the “Learn More Session” where library workers reported on the results of a survey of library users. Learning about the students’ views of the library collection, facilities, and services through the survey, the library workers discussed how to improve service and communication with the library’s users. What I learned at this session will greatly help me as I continue my work as an intern at the library in the coming weeks.
