[Review] International Conference on Reviving Democratic Commitments

On September 13, the KF and the World Movement for Democracy (WMD) gathered in Seoul to jointly conduct the international symposium “Reviving Democratic Commitments: Strengthening Citizenship and Institutions.” More than 100 scholars and civic leaders attended the gathering, showing keen interest in the topic.
  The first panel discussion dealt with Korean democracy and the second panel, building upon the outcome of the first panel discussion, shared worldwide examples of grassroots movements that solidified democratic values. Especially noteworthy was the attendance of democratic movement leaders from 10 countries, including Armenia, Iraq, Kenya, the Philippines, and the United States, each adding significant depth to the discussion.
  In May, in cooperation with the WMD, the KF organized a workshop on “Transitioning from a People’s Movement to Democratic Consolidation” at the Ninth Global Assembly of the World Movement for Democracy in Senegal. At the workshop, Professor Chang Duk-jin of Seoul National University gave a presentation on “The Influence of Candlelight Protests on Korean Democracy” with the keen attention of participants from around the world.
