[Review] ASEAN Meal Kit Project

From November 20 to December 11 last year, the KF-operated ASEAN Culture House (ACH) sold meal kits for five dishes from three ASEAN member countries with support from an online crowdfunding campaign to benefit immigrant women married to Korean men.

The meal kits contained preprepared ingredients, condiments, and recipes to enable easy cooking at home. They were designed to bring ASEAN flavors to individual homes in Korea in a convenient, contactless way. On the menu were pad thai and thot man pla from Thailand; bo kho and cha gio from Viet Nam; and pancit bihon from the Philippines. Cha gio and pad thai are already familiar to Koreans but the menu also included less-familiar dishes like the Thai fish cake thot man pla and pancit bihon, which is quite similar to Korean japchae. In special commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the outbreak of the Korean War, the Thai and Philippine dishes were included in the kit to show Koreans’ gratitude to the ASEAN countries that dispatched troops to Korea during the war.

The crowdfunding campaign turned out to be a huge success, raising funds 1,179% of the originally set amount. The online fundraising campaign was jointly organized by the ACH; Talk To Me Dabab, a cooperative for female marriage immigrants; and Dajeong Dagam, a collegians’ club. Proceeds from the sales were put toward helping female marriage immigrants develop specialized job skills.
