[Meeting Korean Culture Abroad] Italian Chefs Cook Bulgogi and Bibimbap

What might native Korean dishes made by foreign hands taste like? How might Italian chefs interpret the Korean habit of eating haemul pajeon, a Korean seafood and green onion pancake, on rainy days? A group of Italian cooking experts, including a Michelin-star chef, were challenged to make hansik, or traditional Korean cuisine, during a live K-cooking Show during the online Korea Week sponsored by the Korean Cultural Center of Italy.

One after another, six Italian chefs appeared on the show, cooking one dish each. Among the six was Fabrizio Ferrari, who is active in Korea after having taken part in a cooking competition called Hansik Daecheop, or Korean Food Battle on Korean TV channel O’live.

The K-cooking Show not only featured such famous Korean dishes as bulgogi, bibimbap, and gimbap, but also introduced haemul pajeon, paired with makgeolli, a Korean rice wine; bossam, a pork dish served with kimchi; and songpyeon, half-moon shaped rice cakes celebrating the autumnal full moon festival, Chuseok. It was truly amazing to see an Italian chef rolling gimbap so expertly and another skillfully making songpyeon.

These days, Korean Cultural Centers around the world are busily expanding online events and programs to deliver the looks, tastes, and recipes of various Korean dishes. While the Korean Cultural Center in Sydney recently demonstrated the cooking of five different Korean chicken dishes, the New Delhi branch hosted a Korean cooking competition, inviting netizens to participate as jurors.

Visit the social media accounts and YouTube channels of Korean Cultural Centers around the world and discover the unique taste of hansik by cooking one of the many recipes on offer! Add your own tastes and styles to these recipes to enjoy some even more special hansik!
