[Bridging the World] ArtWecan Helps Musicians with Disabilities Achieve Dreams

ArtWecan, also known as the Korea Culture and Arts Association for Citizens with Developmental Disabilities, is a performing arts organization that has presented over 400 performances at home and abroad since its founding in 2013. With 300 members with developmental disabilities across the nation, ArtWecan plans and books professional musicians in classical music, gugak (traditional music), and pop. To that end, the association carried out the Video Production Project for International Exchange last year from June to December despite the COVID-19 pandemic, and produced two videos that received a positive response.

The first video, Unite Together over COVID-19 (We are the World), featured the Korean pop band Grand Grand, whose members have developmental disabilities, and musicians with disabilities from Australia, China, Hungary, Portugal, Russia, Türkiye, and the US. The other is a music video entitled Love is The Answer (The First Time We Met), in which musicians from around the world display a moment of unity through music. ArtWecan and the New York-based Can-do Musos, a multinational non-profit organization of musicians with disabilities, jointly produced this video showing Grand Grand, Prof. Kim Chi-gook from the Berklee College of Music, and professional musicians with or without disabilities from Australia and the US.

ArtWecan’s exchange project testifies to how not even the pandemic could stop the power of music.
