[Jeju Playbook] Places Exuding Jeju’s Charms

[Jeju Playbook] Places Exuding Jeju’s Charms

I may not have stayed on Jeju Island for very long yet, but I would like to introduce a few places of natural beauty and relaxation that are unique to this island and a major reason people fall in love with it.

My favorite place is the Castle of Shell, which is a hop, skip, and a jump from the downtown district of Old Seogwipo. Search for the place on a map to experience a wow moment, as the spot is in the most unlikely location amid trees and bushes. True to its name, the venue stands in the form of a shell on the cliff near Sojeongbang Falls. Its exterior features black stones common to Jeju, and its curve is reminiscent of the island’s coastal rocks and shells. The building’s appearance is in wonderful harmony with the surrounding palm trees and plants, exuding an atmosphere I believe you only find on Jeju, and I especially like it here because of this unique design.

Inside the castle is a book café operated by the Seogwipo city government. When I take a seat at the window with a panoramic view of the sea, I instantly relax while listening to the gentle sound of the waves. When I am in front of the café, I feel like an outsider, as it looks so unusual and distinctive, but once I get in, I immediately feel like I am a part of Jeju. I find it fascinating to have this feeling about a certain space.

There are several other places in Jeju with peculiar designs matching the island’s charms such as the Walart Museum and Lee Jungseop Art Museum. I hope to discover more reasons to love this island in the future.
