Tashkent Intangible Cultural Heritage Week Held in Uzbekistan

From August 29 to September 4, 2022 Tashkent Intangible Cultural Heritage Week was held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, by the Korea-based World Martial Arts Union (WoMAU) as an international exchange of intangible cultural heritages. The occasion also marked the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Korea and Uzbekistan.

The program presented performances jointly featured by Korea and Uzbekistan of traditional martial arts and music in addition to workshops and classes.

The WoMAU was conceived at the Chungju Martial Arts Festival (launched in 1998) to preserve and promote the martial art of taekkyeon, which was designated as an Intangible Cultural Heritage by the Korean government in 1983. Since its founding in 2002, WoMAU has conducted diverse exchanges for the preservation and promotion of traditional martial arts.

There were moments of solidarity and unity on August 30 and September 1 that were created by independent/joint performances and photo exhibitions at the Navoi Theater and throughout Nurafshon. The performance by a trainee with disabilities of the Uzbek martial art, Jang San’ati, showed the power of this martial art to not only enhance physical capability but also instill mental discipline. At the workshop and class for intangible cultural assets at Hotel Uzbekistan’s Conference Hall, musicians from both countries played songs from the soundtrack of the hit Netflix series, Squid Game, after which a taekkyeon instructor gave a mini-class for attendees.

During this event, the two countries signed several memoranda of understanding that are expected to accelerate bilateral efforts for the promotion, preservation, and exchange of traditional Korean and Uzbek martial arts. The week-long program was also recorded as a documentary, which will be screened at a documentary festival in the first half of 2023.
