Soesokkak, Jeju Island’s Hidden Beauty

Having traveled to Jeju Island several times since my childhood, I was no newcomer by the time I moved to the island for work. However, it felt as if something would be different this time; I had a hunch that I would be able to experience some previously hidden, secret features of the island.

One day, while surfing YouTube, I came across Soesokkak, a clear, deep pond on Jeju Island with blue-green water, and was instantly charmed by its mysterious beauty. The very next day, I packed a bottle of water and headed there on my bike.

After an hour or so of uninterrupted pedaling, I arrived at the pond. Located where the sea meets a valley, it looked like something straight from an old tale. The pond was also said to be the home of a dragon and therefore became the site of rituals for rain in times of draught.

I was amazed by the serene, indescribable beauty of the place, surrounded by a rugged precipice of fantastically shaped rocks. I got into a kayak and slowly paddled around. As I took in the scenery, it felt as if the cheery birdsong and the fluttering leaves falling from the trees on the cliff were welcoming me.

Once I’d finished kayaking, I walked onto the wooden deck positioned over the cliff, taking in the view one last time. I hoped to remember the mystic pond and each and every bit of its surroundings. The day was unforgettable in that it created a simple, yet meaningful memory for me. I hope you too will experience a day of happiness found somewhere nearby.
