[Review] 25 Years of Korea-Vietnam Ties Celebrated with Public Art Project

The KF conducted its “Vietnam-Korea Joint Project: Art for a Better Space” in the heart of Hanoi from November 2017 to February 2018. Artists from the two countries worked hand in hand on the project, painting elaborate murals along the nineteen arches of the elevated railway from Hanoi’s Hoan Kiem Lake to the Long Bien Bridge.
Commemorating the twenty-fifth anniversary of bilateral diplomatic relations between the two countries, the project was jointly planned by the KF and the Hoan Kiem District People’s Committee, and was carried out with the cooperation of both the Lee Gang Jun Institute of Public Design and UN-Habitat Vietnam.
The Hoan Kiem District, in the mold of Seoul’s Jongno-gu, showcases the history and culture of the Vietnamese capital. Themed “Memories of Hanoi,” the wall paintings were designed to transform the area into a space where visitors can enjoy a tranquil escape surrounded by the storied history of the city.
The project captured the imaginations of both Hanoi residents and local media, with Vietnam Television (VTV) and Vietnam Television Corporation (VTC) filing requests to cover the event. It is hoped that the project will not only provide visitors with a cultural urban oasis, but will also help fuel the city’s push towards sustainable development.
