On July 21 amid a record-breaking heat wave, the Korean Culture Class left Seoul to go rafting on the Dong River in Yeongwol, Gangwon-do. Under the instruction of their expert guides, the foreign participants and Korean volunteers paddled away the heat while taking in the wonderful harmony of the surrounding hills. At times, they were dashed against the strong waves, while at others, they were able to rest, listening as the guides explained about the rocks and the names of the many places straddling the river’s shore. Riding together in a single raft, using teamwork to paddle as one and shouting commands and words of encouragement in each of their languages, the rafters quickly developed trust and indeed friendship–the perfect metaphor for the work of the Korean Culture Class.
