Korea and the Southern Hemisphere

The Program Committee for the 2013 Biennial Conference of the Korean Studies Association of Australasia invites PhD students, early career researchers and academic colleagues to the Australian National University to present their research and enhance our understanding of Korea in the world today. Proposals from all disciplines on any topic are welcome.  With a mind to our location in Australasia, we extend a particular invitation to research that addresses Korea’s engagement with the southern hemisphere.  Potential topics might include but are not limited to:

 · Influence of religions in the formation of modern Korea
 · The legacy of the Korean War and ANZAC
 · Minority communities and multiculturalism
 · South Korea and Australia as “Middle Powers”
 · History of and prospects for North Korea
 · Human rights and NGO activities
 · Gender politics in North and South Korea
 · Korean creative industries and global markets

Panels and Individual Papers

Organised panels are preferred, but individual papers are welcome as well. Panels that combine presentations by PhD students together with academics are especially encouraged. Panel proposals should have a general abstract for the panel (<250 words), plus abstracts for each of the individual papers (<250 words).

Roundtables

Suggestions for innovative roundtable are welcome. Roundtables may be organised around a theme, discipline, policy or research question, or could be focused on discussion of an important book in the field. Roundtables may feature up to five speakers, and no less than three. Instead of 15-20 minute papers, roundtable presenters will deliver short presentations (approximately 5 minutes) that will be moderated by the roundtable chair. These abbreviated presentations will leave plenty of time for discussion generated by presenters as well as members of the audience. Proposals for roundtables must include an application form with abstract (<250 words).
