1. 업무 및 연구

- 6월 2일에는 랜드의 연구진과 Korea Foundation LA사무소 김병곤 소장님, 주로스앤젤레스대사관의 문지혜영사님을 모시고 제 개인연구와 PRGS 박사과정학생과의 공동연구의 진행상황에 대해 발표했습니다.
- 발표시 받은 피드백 결과를 반영하여 추가 분석을 했고, 현재는 개인연구의 최종 페이퍼의 서론과 선행연구 부분 writing 중에 있습니다. 공동연구 역시 연구결과를 도출하여 연구 마무리단계에 있습니다. 7월 중반에는 연구결과와 그간 RAND에서의 활동을 정리하여 최종발표를 할 예정입니다.
- 6월 7일에는 대만 연구진 방문에 앞서 논의할 방향에 대해 관련 연구진들과 회의를 했고, 13일에는 대만 연구진이 방문하여 Smart city와 관련하여 대만의 연구소와 랜드에서 각자 진행했던 연구를 공유하였습니다. RAND UK에서 근무중인 박사님도 원격으로 연결하여 기존연구를 공유했습니다.


2. 세미나

- 매주 정기적으로 열렸던 세미나가 6월 첫째주를 마지막으로 여름동안 잠시 휴지기를 갖는다고 하였습니다. 정기 세미나 외에도 공동연구를 하고 있는 PRGS 박사과정 학생이 이메일로 세미나정보를 전달해준 덕에 다양한 세미나에 참석할 수 있었습니다. 6월에 참석한 세미나는 아래와 같습니다.

3. 기타

- May Grey, June Gloom 이라는 별칭이 있을 만큼 5-6월 LA지역의 날씨는 흐린 날이 많았습니다. 아침이면 항상 날씨가 찌푸려져 있다가 낮에 잠깐 햇빛이 쨍하고 오후에는 또다시 구름이 많이 끼는 날씨가 반복되어 추위에 약한 저는 항상 가디건을 챙겨 다녔습니다. 실제로 산타모니카 지역은 바다가 바로 옆에 있어 LA보다 기온이 낮기도 합니다. 6월말이 되면서 섭씨 40도까지 기온이 오르는 등 전형적인 캘리포니아의 여름 날씨가 시작된 것 같습니다. 하지만 비도 거의 오지 않고 건조해서 한국처럼 습하고 무더운 날씨는 아닙니다.
- RAND내의 Center for Middle East Public Policy (CMEPP) Film Club 주최의 영화 상영행사가 있었습니다. RAND 직원은 물론이고 직원의 친구나 가족을 초청할 수도 있는 행사였습니다. 영화 제목은 ‘Jihad in Hollywood’로, 시리아 출신의 Jihad (Jay) Abdo가 LA 할리우드에서 재출발을 위해 고군분투하는 내용의 다큐멘터리 영화였습니다. 영화 상영 후에는 Jihad Abdo와의 Q&A세션이 있었습니다. 6월 행사를 시작으로 매달 이와 같은 행사를 진행할 예정이라고 합니다.
