안녕하세요. 미국 미시간대학교 아시아도서관에 파견된 박수진입니다. 인턴십 4개월차에는 미시간대 도서관에서 열린 다양한 교육 프로그램에 참여해보았습니다.
Conservation and Book Repair
미시간대학교 도서관에는 Buhr Building이라는 보존서고가 있습니다. Buhr에는 Conservation and Book Repair 부서가 있어 고서나 손상된 도서 및 각종 자료들을 복원하고 보존처리(탈산처리) 합니다. 사료적 가치가 높은 소장자료들을 안전하고 과학적인 방법을 통해 보존하고 있습니다. 기존 소장하고 있거나 새로 입수되는 아시아 도서관 컬렉션의 많은 고서들도 이곳에서의 복원 작업을 거치게 됩니다. 복원 담당자의 안내로 보존처리 과정과 복원 중인 자료들을 볼 수 있었습니다.
Identifying Early Illustration Processes In Rare Books
Teaching Space at the Special Collections Library
Enriching Scholarship 프로그램 중 하나인 Illustrations in early printed books의 인쇄 기법을 익히는 워크샵에 참여하였습니다. Woodcuts, engravings, lithographs 등의 인쇄 기법과 Early illustration process를 익히는 것은 큐레이터 및 사서, 수집가, 연구자들에게 Early illustration을 이해하는데 유용했습니다. Special Collection 큐레이터의 지도로 ‘How the materiality of books shapes the creation, reception and dissemination of ideas’라는 타이틀과 함께 프로그램이 진행되었습니다. 그리고 ‘Who is the original artist whose work we see in a copperplate engraving?’, ‘Why is the printer risking so much capital in the production of a richly illustrated book?’, ‘Are the artist and the woodcutter the same person?’, ‘What is the relationship between the image and text?’ 등의 질문을 가지고 인쇄 기법에 대한 추측과 토의를 해보았습니다.

2. 다양한 세미나 및 미팅 참여: Computer & Video Game Archive Space Share, Introduction To Copyright, Research Team Meeting, Digital Preservation Lab + Digital Conversion Unit Open House, Public Services Communications Forum at the Clark Library 등에 참여하였습니다.
