주변을 둘러보자. 익숙한 장면이 눈에 들어오는가? 타이타닉호 갑판 위의 로즈와 잭, 분홍색 집에 사는 바비 인형 그리고 연설 중인 총리의 모습이 보일 것이다.

유명 인물, 즉 한 시대를 풍미한 '아이콘'의 모습이 담긴 《아이콘-존재의 권리에 대한 사진전>은 '존재의 권리'에 대한 메세지를 던진다. 각 작품에는 누구나 한 번쯤 가져봄 직한 꿈과 사회의 일원이 되고자 하는 이들의 보편적 꿈과 열망이 담겼다. 반면 아이콘을 연기한 사진 속 모델들은 우리 곁에 있음에도 드러나는 것이 허락되지 않은 자들이 맡았다. 바로 스웨덴에서 온 21명의 모델이다. 이들에게는 여러 공통점이 있다. 꿈과 감정 그리고 다운증후군을 갖고 있다는 점이다.

이번 전시는 단순한 사진전시 그 이상의 의미를 갖는다. 그가 누구이든 세상 속 존재의 권리, 다른 이들 앞에 자유로이 나설 권리에 관해 다루기 때문이다. 사람은 아이콘, 롤모델과 같은 상징적 존재를 필요로 한다. 여기 21명의 모델이 표현한 각각의 꿈은 모두의 것이기도 하다. 우리 중에 여왕이나 배우, 경찰관이나 어머니가 되는 상상을 해보지 않은 사람은 없을테니까 말이다.

한국국제교류재단과 주한스웨덴대사관, 스웨덴의 포토그라피스카 사진박물관, 글라다후디크 극단이 협력하여 개최한 이번 전시는 아시아 최초 순회전이다. 더불어 사진작가 엠마 스벤손, 의상 디자이너 린다 산드베리, 헬레나 안데르손 등 많은 이가 힘을 모아 '도전과 난관'이라는 주제를 이 사진전에 담았다.

가려졌던 존재가 시야에 들어오면 비로소 그 차이를 인식하게 된다. 각 사람이 가진 빛나는 장점과 숨기고 싶은 단점 역시 우리 사회를 다채롭게 만드는 요소이다. 그렇기에 모든 사람은 고유하고 개별적이다. 동시에 다른 이와 크게 다르지 않기도 하다. 즉, 관점에 따라 완전히 다르기도 하고 비슷하기도 한 것이다.

Take a look around. Any familiar scenes? Like Rose and Jack on the deck of the Titan- ic, Barbie in her pink house, or a prime min- ister addressing the nation?

Ikoner (Icons) is an exhibition about the right to exist, featuring portraits of famous icons and archetypes we can all recognize or relate to. The pictures show universal dreams, and the desire to be part of popular culture, art, or society. However, our icons are depicted by a group who have rarely, if ever, been allowed to stand out, despite always being among us. These 21 models from all over Sweden have lots of things in common: dreams, feelings, and Down syn- drome.

This exhibition is about more than just photography. It's about the right to exist and stand out, whoever you are. We all need an icon or role model to relate to. The dreams depicted by the 21 models belong to us all because who's never imag- ined becoming a queen, an actor, a police officer, or a mother?

The exhibition, which is held in cooperation with the Korea Foundation, the Embassy of Sweden to the Republic of Korea, Stockholm's Photography Art Museum Fotografiska, and the Glada Hudik Theater in Hu- diksvall, is the first exhibition to be present- ed in Asia. Pär Johansson, founder of the Glada Hudik Theater, photographer Emma Svensson, and costume designers Linda Sandberg and Helena Andersson have col- laborated in many ways, and the exhibition is also about challenges and difficulties.

Being visible creates an awareness of difference. All our qualities and flaws make society more colorful, and in some way, we're all unusual, or different. We're all unique, but not as unique as we think.
