여러분은 서체 '헬베티카(Helvetica)'에 대해서 얼마나 알고 계신가요? 스위스에서 만들었으며 기업 로고에 자주 적용되는 중립적인 느낌의 서체이자, 장식이 배제된 대표적인 로마자 서체인 산 세리프 중 하나라는 것을 아신다면 이미 많은 정보를 갖고 계신 겁니다. 여기서 멈추지 않고 조금 더 깊이 들여다본다면, 우리의 일상에 깊이 자리한 헬베티카의 존재감을 재발견하고 서체가 지닌 특유의 표정을 알아차릴 수 있을 거라 확신합니다.
그 마중물이 되어줄 전시가 우리 곁에 찾아왔습니다. 한국·스위스 수교 60주년을 맞아 주한스위스대사관과 한국국제교류재단이 함께 선보이는 전시 <한글 헬베티카 서밋〉은 서체 헬베티카를 주제로 출발합니다. 1957년 스위스에서 처음 디자인된 이래 지금까지 이토록 광범위한 영향을 미친 서체는 아마 세상 어디에도 없을 것입니다. 이렇듯 국제적으로 널리 통용되는 서체 헬베티카는 그래픽 역사의 중요한 부분이며 서체 이상의 의미가 있습니다.
2022년 국내 대표적인 한글 서체 디자이너 이용제는 '헬베티카'의 특징과 디자인적 속성을 한글에 적용했고, '쓔이써60'라는 이름의 새로운 서체가 탄생했습니다. 한글과 알파벳, 구조부터 달라도 너무 다른 두 문자의 디자인적 차이와 유사성을 연결하는 창의적 해석과 실험이 나은 결과물입니다. 이 과정에 전 세계에서 활동 중인 스무 명(팀)의 디자이너가 두 서체를 활용한 포스터 작업에 참여하였고, 스위스를 대표하는 예술대학 로잔예술대학교(ECAL)의 석사과정생들이 한글을 연구하여 다양한 서체 디자인을 창안하였습니다.
본 전시는 헬베티카 서체의 유래와 발전사, 쓔이써60' 서체에 대한 상세한 소개를 비롯한 다섯 개의 섹션을 통해 스위스와 한국의 문자적 특징을 헬베티카라는 특수한 렌즈로 조명해봅니다. 국제적인 디자이너들과 차세대 서체 디자이너들이 선보이는 포스터 작품도 만날 수 있으며 이를 통해 다양한 매체에 적용된 헬베티카와 한글의 역동적인 변주 및 상호관계성을 엿볼 수 있습니다.
한국과 스위스 교류 60주년을 맞은 오늘, 우리는 헬베티카와 쓔이써60 서체에 담긴 이야기와 가능성을 통해 문화적 교차와 소통의 확장을 발견하길 기대합니다.
How well do you know 'Helvetica"? A typeface made in Switzerland often used in corporate logos, a neu- tral sans-serif typeface free from ornamentation - if you know this much already, then you know more than the average person. However, if you look a little deeper, you'll discover the presence of Helvetica in our daily lives and recognize the distinctive expres- sion of this endearing typeface.
In celebration of the 60th anniversary of Swiss-Kore- an diplomatic relations, the Embassy of Switzerland in Korea and the Korea Foundation proudly present Hangul Helvetica Summit. Helvetica is an important part of graphic design history and more than just an internationally accepted typeface. Since it was first designed in Switzerland in 1957, the typeface has had a far-reaching impact and thrived into the font it is today.
In 2022, Hangul font designer Lee Yongje embarked on a project to adapt the characteristics and design properties of “Helvetica' to Hangul. 'Süsa60' is the result of creative interpretation and experimentation, bringing the essence of a neo-grotesque sans-serif font to Hangul. Throughout the process, twenty de- signers from around the world designed poster work using Helvetica and Süsa60. In addition, master's students of Switzerland's leading art university ECAL/Lausanne University of Art and Design researched and developed Hangul prototypes of their fonts.
The exhibition introduces the origin and history of Helvetica as well as its design characteristics and values. Swiss and Korean design values are viewed and discovered through a special Helvetica lens. International poster work and various media present- ed by designers from many regions and generations reveal the dynamic directions and inter-relationships of graphic design.
Commemorating the 60 years of diplomatic ties be- tween Switzerland and the Republic of Korea, Hangul Helvetica Summit provides a platform for meaningful cultural intersections and communication to discover and possibly foretell the narrative of graphic design through the common denominator of letters and the written word.
