한국국제교류재단은 2021년 11월 17일부터 12월 17일까지 주한우루과이대사 관과 함께《우루과이의 가우초 Gauchos) 사진전을 KF갤러리와 VR 전시를 통 해서 개최한다. 전시는 우루과이를 대표하는 사진 작가 루이스 파비니(Luis Fabini, 1965〜)의 한국 첫 전시로, 고유한 삶의 방식을 유지하며 자연과 공존 하는 우루과이의 목동 “가우초” 사진을 통해 우루과이의 문화와 자연을 엿볼 수 있게 한다. 특별히 ‘콜럼버스 신대륙 발견 이전의 원주민 예술 박물관(MAPI)’이 협력한 이 전시는 33점의 백금 팔라듬 인화 사진 33점과 일본 수제 아와가미 종 이에 인쇄한 8점의 컬러 사진으로 구성된다.우루과이의 문화유산에 깊은 애정을 갖고 오래 작업해 온 파비니는 첫 번 째 사진집〈가우초(Gauchos)〉(2012)에 이어〈아메리카의 목동(Cowboys of the Americas)〉(2016)을 출판하며 사람과 말 사이의 깊은 관계를 사진으로 포착해 왔다. 내셔널 지오그래픽의 전속 탐험가이자 인류학자인 웨이드 데이비스(Wade Davis)는 “루이스 파비니의 사진은 가우초 문화와 독특한 삶의 방식을 놀라우리 만치 아름다운 모습으로 환기한다. 더불어 가장 독특한 종(種)간 관계 중 하나 인 말과 인간의 관계를 기리고 있다.”라고 설명한다. 가우초가 말을 모는 것은 말에게 있어서는 위험을 향해 달려가는 행위일 수 있으나 둘은 결국 서로 교감 하게 되고 같은 방향을 향해 달리는 땅 위의 생명으로서 공존한다. 이로써 인간 은 그 이전에는 상상할 수 없었을 거리를, 한계를 넘어 빠르게 이동하게 되었으 며 말과 함께하는 대지의 광경은 완벽히 순수하고 아름다운 장면이 된다. 파비 니의 가우초 사진들은 인간과 자연 그리고 이 모두가 공존하는 땅에 관한 것이 라고도 할 수 있다.우루과이의 가우초들과 여러 달 함께 생활하며 그들의 삶에 녹아든 후 사 진을 찍은 파비니의 작품들은 결코 연출된 것이 아닌 가우초들의 삶 그 자체이 다. 그의 사진들은 모든 것이 빠르게 소모되는 현대 사회 속에서, 나고 자란 땅 의 전통을 수호하고 그 일상에 자부심을 느끼는 가우초의 단순하고 엄격한 삶의 태도를 드러낸다. 우리는 이 전시를 통해 현대 사회에서 가우초로 살아간다는 명제 자체가 독자적 삶의 방식에 관한 무한한 긍정임을 느낄 수 있다.파비니의 사진은 유럽과 미국의 다양한 컬렉션에 소장되어 있으며 프랑스 판〈지오〉,〈아웃사이드〉,〈스턴〉등의 저명한 잡지를 통해 전 세계에 알려져 있 다. 전시를 관람하는 우리 국민과 재외국민은 국제적인 사진작가의 작업을 직접 감상할 특별한 기회를 만나는 동시에 실제로 우루과이 북부를 여행하는 듯한 기느낄 수 있을 것이다. 이 전시를 통해 한국과 대척지에 위치한 우루과이 사분을람들의 삶과 문화를 한충 가깝게 느끼고 인간과 자연, 전통과 현대의 조화로운 공존을 목격할 수 있기를 희망한다.

From November 17 to December 17,2021, the Korea Foundation (KF) presents the Gauchos photography exhibition, held both on-site at the KF Gallery and online as VR exhibition, in collaboration with the Embassy of Uruguay in South Korea.ThisisrenownedUruguayanphotographerLuisFabini(1965〜)’sfirst exhibition in Korea, providing an opportunity to explore the culture and nature of Uruguay through photographs of gauchos, Uruguayan cowboys who coexist with nature through their unique lifestyle. Organized in cooperation with the Museum of Pre-Columbian and Indigenous Art (MAPI), the exhibition features 33 platinum palladium photographs, as well as eight color photographs print­ ed on handmade Japanese awagami paper.Harboring a deep interest in Uruguayan cultural heritage, Fabini captures the deep relationship between humans and horses in his photographs, par­ ticularly with the publication of his first collection of photographs, titled Gau­ chos (2012), and its successor, Cowboys of the Americas (2016). Anthropolo­ gist Wade Davis, an Explorer-in-Residence at the National Geographic Society, said: “Luis Fabini’s photographs are a stunning evocation of a unique way of life, the culture of the cowboys. But they are also a celebration of one of the most extraordinaryrelationshipsbetween species.” Horsesmayrun toward danger while gauchos are riding them, but eventually, humans and horses un­ derstand each other and are able to coexist, running in the same direction. As a result, humansbecame able to travel hitherto unimaginable distanceson horsebacks, with the sight of horses galloping over the earth creating a pure and beautiful scenery. Fabini's portraits of gauchos are thus as much about humans and horses as about the land where both coexist.Fabini spent several months living with Uruguayan gauchos to fully un-derstand their way of life while capturing them on film. His photographs are not staged but show life at its most authentic. In contrast to contemporary so­ ciety, in which rapid consumption reigns supreme, Fabini’s photographs reveal gauchos, simple, strict, and proud approach to life as they preserve the tradi­ tions of the land where they were born and raised. Visitors and viewers of the exhibition will be able to feel that living as a gaucho today means the infinite affirmation of one’s own way of life.Fabani’s photographs are included in collections in Europe and the Unit­ ed States and have been published around the world in magazines such as Outside, Stern, and the French edition of GEO. This exhibition will provide visi­ tors and viewers with the unique opportunity to enjoy works by an internation­ al photographer while virtually traveling to the north of Uruguay. We hope that this exhibition will allow viewers to feel closer to the life and culture of people in Uruguay, the antipode of Korea, and witness the harmonious coexistence between humans and nature and between tradition and modernity.
