한국국제교류재단과 주한벨기에대사관은 2021년 한-벨기에 수교 120주년 기념전 <말의머리>를 2021년 12월 28일부터 2022년 2월 9일까지 KF갤러리와 VR전시로 개최한다.이 전시는 세계에서 가장 명망 있는 사진상인 소니 월드 포토그래피 어워즈(SONY World Photography Awards)에서 2017년, '올해의 사진 작가'로 선정된 벨기에 출신 국제적 사진가 프레데릭 벅스(Frederik Buyckx, 1984~)의 한국 첫 전시이다.'말의 머리'라는 제목은 작업의 계기가 된, 작가의 첫 번째 키르기스스탄 여행에서 비록되었다. 말과 함께하는 콕-보루(Kok-boru)라는 전통 시합이 진행되고 있던 키르기스스탄의 작은 마을 '앳 바시(At-Bassy)' 근처에서 머물던 작가는,반 유목민 목동들의 전통적 삶의 방식과 말과의 교감에 깊이 감명 받고 두 달 만에 다시 키르기스스탄으로 돌아간다.키르기스스탄의 혹독한 추위와 그 안에서 100km씩 이동하며 공존하는 인간과 동물의 삶은 그에게 신선한 충격과 매혹 그 자체였다. 인간과 동물이 험난한 대자연 속에서 상호 의존적인 관계를 이루며 삶의 영역을 확장해 나가는 것을 목격한벅스는 그 경이로운 과정을 존경하고 기억하고자 '앳 바시'라는 마을을 의미하는 '말의 머리'라는 용어를, 이 강렬한 프로젝트의 제목으로 삼았다.매그넘(Magnum)의 사진작가 비케 디푸터(Bieke Deporter)는 "벅스의 사진을 보는 이들은 말과 눈 덮인 풍경을 여행할 때 피부를 가르는 바람을 느낄 수 있다."라고 말한다.이처럼 벅스의 흑백 사진들은 예측할 수 없는 키르기스스탄 대자연의 압도적인 장엄함과 아름다움을 강조함과 동시에 보는 이를 그 안으로 끌어들인다. 그 안의 인물들은 마치 설산을 향해 전진하는 것 같기도,정착지에서 이내 사라지는 것 같기도 하다. 이는 곧 공허하고도 장엄한 기념비적인 풍경이 된다.전시를 위해 특별히 주한키르기스스탄대사관이 협력한다. 이 프로젝트를 위해 벅스는 키르기스스탄 반 유목민 공동체와 깊은 유대감을 형성했고 유목민들이 이주 중에 마주치는 거대한 풍경들을 보여줌으로써 그들의 삶에 깊이 몰두할 수 있는 기회를 제공한다.이는 그 자체로 '말의 머리'의 반 유목민들을 떠올리게 하며, 키르기스스탄의 유산을 축적하는 과정이라고 할 수 있다.소니 월드 포토그래퍼 어워즈 심사위원장인 젤다 치틀(Zelda Cheatle)은 "벅스의 작품은 사진을 바라보는 행위의 본질로 돌아가게끔 한다. 풍경(landscape)은 종종 간과되지만, 그것은 사실 우리 존재의 중심이다"라고 말한 바 있다.현대인들은 종종 잊고 살지만, 인간과 자연의 관계는 지구에 사는 그 누구에게나 가장 중요하고 핵심적인 관계 중의 하나다. '말의 머리' 사람들은 한국의 서울이나 벨기에의 브뤼셀 사람들과는 전혀 다른 환경에서 살고 있다.2021년 추운 겨울, 한-벨기에 수교 120주년을 기념해 한국에서 개막하는 이 전시가, 다양한 지역의 풍경을 접하고 다층적 삶을 체험할 수 있는 세계문화교류의 계기로 역할하길 희망한다.

The Korea Foundation and the Embassy of Belgium in Korea present HorseHead, an exhibition commemorating the 120th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Korea and Belgium, at the KF Gallery and online as VR exhibition. The exhibition is held from December 28, 2021, to February 9, 2022. Itis the first feature exhibition in Korea of Belgian-born international photographer Frederik Buyckx (b. 1984), who was named Photographer of the Yearat the 2017 SONY World Photography Awards, the world’s most prestigiousphotography honor.The title of the exhibition, Horse Head, comes from the artist's first tripto Kyrgyzstan, which inspired the series of works. Staying in At-Bashy, asmall village where he witnessed the traditional horseback game of Kok-boru being played, the artist became deeply moved by the local semi-nomadicshepherds’ traditional way of life and their connection with horses. Buyckxdecided to visit Kyrgyzstan again just two months after his first trip had ended. Kyrgyzstan’s harsh cold and the symbiotic life of humans and animalsthat migrate some 100 kilometers together in such frigid weather cameacross as refreshingly shocking and fascinating to him. After witnessing humans and animals expanding their territories of life in the brutal wilderness,interdependent on one another, Buyckx chose the name of the village At Bashy, which translates to “horse head,” as the title of this powerful projectin respect and remembrance of these phenomenal migrations.Magnum photographer Bieke Depoorter writes, “In Frederik’s photographs, you can almost feel the wind cut through your skin as you journey byhorse through the snow-covered landscape.” As described, Buyckx’s black-and-white photographs emphasize the overwhelming majesty and beautyof Kyrgyzstan’s unpredictable nature, as they allow viewers to become absorbed by the landscapes. The figures in the images sometimes seem likethey are advancing towards the snowy mountains, and other times like theyare disappearing from their settlements; the images soon turn into emptyyet solemn monumental landscapes.This exhibition was made possible through a special cooperation withthe Embassy of Kyrgyzstan in Korea. In carrying out the Horse Head project,Buyckx formed a profound bond with the semi-nomadic community of Kyrgyzstan, and the resulting photographs visualize the massive landscapesthat nomads encounter as they roam, presenting an opportunity for viewersto immerse themselves deeply into nomadic life. The works in themselvesare reminders of At-Bashy’s semi-nomadic community and can be seen as aprocess of archiving Kyrgyz heritage.Zelda Chitle, chair of judges at the SONY World Photography Awards,explained, “The work of Buyckx returns to the essence of looking at photography. A landscape is often overlooked but it is central to our existence.”While people today often forget this, the relationship between humansand nature is one of the most vital and essential relationships for all of theearth’s inhabitants. The people of At-Bashy live in an environment that isutterly different from those of Seoul, Korea, and Brussels, Belgium. This ehibition, held in the cold winter of 2021 in celebration of the 120 year-longdiplomatic ties between Korea and Belgium, is expected to serve as platformfor cultural exchange, allowing visitors to encounter the landscapes of diverse regions and experience the multiple layers of life.
