한국국제교류재단은 2024년 4월 26일부터 2024년 9월 7일까지 2024년 파리 올림픽 계기 KFXR 갤러리 기획전 《메타 시티: 서울-파리》를 개최한다. 전시는 올림픽이라는 국제적 행사의 인류보편적 가치를 기념하고, 한국과 프랑스 각국의 올림픽 개최지인 서울과 파리라는 도시 (City)를 중심으로 상호 교감하는 초월적(Meta) 장을 마련하고자 기획되었다.
전시는 한국과 프랑스의 초국가적, 초공간적 소통과 교류의 의미를 담은 실감형/미디어아트 작업들로 구성된다. 작품들은 물리적 경계를 초월한 가상 현실을 통해 각 나라의 장소특정성 및 가상공간을 바라보는 관점에 관한 이해를 높인다. 이를 통해 서울-파리 나아가 한국-프랑스 간의 상호 교류의 기회를 증진하고 전지구적 평화를 추구하는 세계시민으로서의 미래지향적인 비전을 제시하고자 한다.
각세대를 대표하는 한국과 프랑스의 선구적인 예술가인 백남준, 미구엘 슈발리에, 권하윤은 상대 국가에 관한 애정과 존중을 바탕으로 작업한 작품들을 선보인다. 이를 통해 관람객들은 한국과 프랑스가깊이 교감하며 구축한아름답고 초월적인 세계를 디지털과 가상 현실을통해 만나볼수있다.
백남준은 1988년 서울올림픽을 기념하여 <다다익선>이라는 위대한 작품을 남겼는데, 동기획전에는 소마미술관의 의뢰로 프랑스 출신의 근대 올림픽 창시자 피에르 쿠베르탱(Pierre Coubertin)에 관해 제작한 비디오 설치 조각 <쿠베르탱(小)>이전시된다. 2024 파리 선수촌을 위한 작품을 선보인, 프랑스를 대표하는 국제적 입지의 미디어 아티스트 미구엘 슈발리에는 최근 몇 년 동안의 한국에서의 활발한 활동을 바탕으로 '서울의 도시성에 주목한 신작 <메타시티AI 서울2024>를 제작하여 KFXR 갤러리에서 최초로 공개한다. 권하윤은 파리의 특별한 공간에 관한 프랑스인 스승의 추억을 듣고 자신의 관점을 토대로 재구성한 VR 작업 <새(鳥) 여인>을 통해, 관람객들과 소중한 공간을 함께 만들어가며 의미를 창출하는 기회를 제공한다.
이 외에도 주한프랑스대사관 문화과와 프랑스 해외문화진흥원, 서울문화재단과의 협력을 통해 한국과 프랑스의 가상 공간에 관한 동시대적 관점을 살필 수 있는 작품들이 마련되어 있다. 그 중 배우 콜린 파렐이 영어 내레이션을 맡은 VR 작품 <글루미 아이즈>와 한국 아티스트 듀오 룸톤이 제작한 <인사이드 드림>은 꿈과 현실을 오가며 미지의 세계에 관한 인식과 상상의 폭을 넓히는 초월적인 가상 공간 체험을 통해 비현실적인 세계를 현실보다 생생하게 제시한다.
2024년 파리올림픽은 전지구적 과제인 '지속가능'을 중요한 키워드로 삼고 파리의 역사적 장소와 기존 건축물들을 활용해 다양한 경기를 운영하기로 하였다. 이번 전시에서는 이러한 파리 올림픽의 취지를 전달하기 위해 VR 및 인터랙티브 콘텐츠를 통해 올림픽이 개최되는 파리의 주요 장소들을 실감하는 기회를 제공한다. 이 작업을 통해서도 서울-파리 간의 물리적 거리감을 없애고 초국가적 교감과 쌍방 교류의 의미를 체감할 수 있을 것이다.

From April 26 to September 7, 2024, the Korea Foundation (KF) presents the special exhibition Meta City: Seoul-Paris at the KF XR Gallery in celebration of the 2024 Paris Olympics. Honoring the universal human values promoted by the international event, this exhibition posits itself a transcendental (meta-) platform mediating the communication between Seoul and Paris, two host cities of the Olympic Games.
The exhibition is comprised of immersive and media artworks that explore the transnational and trans-spatial communication and exchange between Korea and France. Presenting virtual realities that transcend physical boundaries, the site-specific works offer a heightened understanding of each country's relationship with the venues featured and the perspective on virtual spaces, thereby promoting exchange between Seoul and Paris-and between Korea and France at large-and proposing a peace - and future-oriented vision for global citizens.
Featured works by Korean artists Nam June Paik and Kwon Hayoun and French artist Miguel Chevalier, each a visionary of their respective generations, hint at the artists' affection and respect for the other's country. The digital and virtual realities presented by the works invite viewers into the beautiful, transcendental worlds constructed as a result of the profound connection between Korea and France.
Among works by Paik, whose oeuvre includes the monumental work The More, The Better, produced in commemoration of the 1988 Seoul Olympics, this exhibition features Coubertin (Small version), a video installation commissioned by the Seoul Olympic Museum of Art and inspired by Pierre de Coubertin, the French founder of the modern-day Olympic Games. Also presented at the KF XR Gallery for the first time is a new work by Chevalier, an internationally renowned French media artist and who d an artwork especially for the Paris 2024 athletes' village, highlighting the urbanity of Seoul based on his past few years of experience working in the city. Meanwhile, Kwon presents a virtual reality (VR) work The Bird Lady reconstructing her French mentor's memory of a distinct place in Paris, inviting viewers to complete the space and generate new meanings.
Additional works that hint at Korea and France's contemporary perspectives on virtual spaces are presented in cooperation with the Culture Department of The Cultural service of the French Embassy in the Republic of Korea, the Institut Français, and the Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture. Among them, the VR works Gloomy Eyes, narrated by actor Colin Farrell, and Inside Dream by the Korean artist duo ROOMTONE, offer experiences of transcendental virtual spaces on the border of fantasy and reality. The surreal worlds, rendered more vividly than reality, expand viewers' scope of perception and imagination of the unknown world.
With the global task of environmental sustainability as its theme, the International Olympic Committee has decided to take advantage of historical sites and existing architecture in Paris as event venues for this year's games. In support of this initiative, the exhibition presents VR and interactive content through which viewers can virtually visit key Olympic venues in Paris. By eliminating the physical distance between Seoul and Paris, the experience provides a heightened sense of transnational connection and exchange.
