한국국제교류재단(KF)은 외교부가 지정한 공공외교 추진기관으로, 1991년 창립 이후 30여 년간 글로벌 한국학 진흥, 국제협력 네트워킹, 문화교류 협력강화 등 다양한 해외 교류 사업을 추진해왔다. 이를 통해 국제사회에서 한국에 대한 관심과 이해의 폭을 넓히고, 한국에서도 적극적으로 타 문화를 이해하고 상호 교감하려는 노력을 기울임으로써 우호적 관계 맺기에서 나아가 다면적인 문화적 가치와 예술적 연결고리를 만들어 나가고자 힘써왔다.

대한민국 공공외교를 기반으로 국가 간의 중추적 가교 역할을 하고 있는 한국국제교류재단은 올해로 30주년을 맞이하는 국내 최대 규모 현대미술 축제 광주비엔날레와 함께 협력 전시를 추진한다. 이 과정을 통해 한국과 아세안 국가 간의 상호 교류와 네트워크 구축, 미래 협력과 발전 방안을 모색할 수 있는 논의의 장을 전시로서 선보이고, 그 안에 담긴 문화적 함의와 예술적 가치를 국제적 관객 층과 함께 교감하고자 한다.

이번 <거리의 서(書)> 전시에서는 광주비엔날레 파빌리온 참여 국가인 아세안 3개국(태국, 말레이시아, 필리핀)과 한국의 현대미술 작가들이 다양한 작품 스펙트럼을 공동의 주제로 묶어내고, 양자간의 공감과 교차점을 작품을 통해 드러낸다. 작가들은 개인의 미시적 경험과 관찰로부터 출발, 사회 속에서 발현되는 독특한 현상을 예술 작업으로 발언하며, 다양한 매체와 기법을 복합적으로 시도한 동시대적 접근방식으로 각기 다른 사회가 동시적으로 마주한 사회문화적 이슈를 조망한다.

작가들은 공통적으로 다문화주의, 문화적 혼동과 정체성, 급격한 경제성장과 도시화의 부산물에 대한 관심, 인간성을 규정하는 존재론적 질문을 쟁점화한다. 이들은 엄청나게 빠른 속도로 전개된 문화적 변동과 해체 과정을 경험해 온 세대이다. 그러기에 각국의 사회, 정치, 역사와 같은 큰 관심에서 뻗어져 나온 개별적 주제의식은 가지고 있지만, 형식에 구애 받지 않는 새로운 시각 언어를 통해 각자의 예술적 서사를 구축해 나간다. 또한 규범적 틀 자체에 의문을 던지고 이를 새로운 시각으로 바라보고, 적극적으로 재구성한다. 한국과 아세안 국가들의 사회 상황과 그 속에서 각 개인이 처한 특수한 상황은 모두 다르겠지만, 아시아라는 지정학적 공동체 속에서 발견되는 보편적 변화의 지점, 즉 동일성을 가진 문화적 풍경을 흥미롭게 포착해 낸다.

전시를 구성하는 다양한 작업들이 발산하는 메시지와 이들간의 과감한 어울림을 통해 지난 시간 한국국제교류재단이 걸어온 과정의 다층적 시도들을 보다 넓은 층위의 관객들과 함께 되새기는 것과 동시에, 더 나아가 한국국제교류재단-광주비엔날레재단 두 기관의 긴밀한 협력을 통해 더욱 깊어지고 넓어질 교류의 외연을 기대해 본다.

The Korea Foundation (KF), the sole public diplomacy promotion organization designated by the Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has fostered diverse overseas exchange programs since its establishment in 1991. These initiatives, which have spanned the KF's 30-year history, include the promotion of Korean studies around the world, networking for international cooperation, and strengthening of cultural exchange partnerships. Through these endeavors, we have widened the international community's interest in and understanding of Korea, and in turn, Korea has actively sought to engage with other cultures, elevating friendly relations through comprehensive cultural values and artistic connections.

The KF promotes exchange and understanding between ASEAN and Korea via thematic exhibitions on ASEAN history and culture, international exchanges and cooperation, and residency programs, all of which shed light on unique aspects of life in ASEAN while projecting an image of Korea and exploring universal values.

The Book of Distance, an exhibition held in collaboration with the Gwangju Biennale, brings together contemporary artists from three ASEAN countries - Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand - that are participating in their respective countries' pavilions at the 2024 Gwangju Biennale, along with Korean artists. Under a common theme, these artists showcase international empathy and the intersection of Korea and ASEAN through their works. Their contemporary approach utilizes various media and techniques to examine social and cultural issues faced simultaneously by different societies.

The artists delve into multiculturalism, refugee issues, cultural identity, the effects of rapid economic growth and urbanization, information overload, and existential questions that define humanity. They construct artistic narratives through new visual languages, questioning and actively reconstructing normative frameworks. Despite differing social conditions across Korea and the 10 ASEAN member states, they captivatingly capture universal points of change within the geopolitical Asian community.

Through the harmony and messages emanating from the diverse works on display, The Book of Distance reflects on the KF's multifaceted endeavors over the years. Furthermore, it looks toward the future, to the expansion of exchanges that will be deepened and broadened through the cooperation between the KF and the Gwangju Biennale.
