한국국제교류재단은 2021년 4월 20일부터 6월 1일까지 주한콜롬비아대사관과 함께 <바람의 구멍> 회화전을 개최한다. 동 전시는 콜롬비아를 대표하는 세계적인 미술가이자 토착 부족 '잉가 Inga'의 일원인 까를로스 하까나미호이의 경이로운 추상 회화들을 한국에서 최초로 선보이는 전시이다.
전시는 KF갤러리와 KF웹사이트를 통해 온·오프라인으로 관람할 수 있다. 관람객들은 하까나미호이의 대형 추상 회화들을 통해 콜롬비아의 자연과 전통이 현대 미술과 조우하는 경이로운 순간을 시지각적으로 체험하고 콜롬비아에 관한 이해를 제고하는 기회를 갖게 될 것이다.
하까나미호이는 1964년 콜롬비아 산티아고에서 고대 잉카 제국 직계 후손인 '잉가' 공동체의 일원으로 태어났다. 그의 고향인 시분도이 골짜기 지역은 울창한지역이다. 이 곳에서 잉가 부족민들은 전통적, 토착적 세계관을 토대로 샤먼과 자연을 존중하는 선조들의 지혜를 실천하며 살아간다. 잉가 문화와 더불어 콜롬비아의 풍요로운 자연은, 하까나미호이 예술 세계의 핵심이자 정신적 기원으로 작용한다. 자연과 인간, 우주, 의식, 꿈, 현실 등 다양한 것들과의 관계가 공감각적인 추상 언어로 제시된 그의 작품 세계는 관람객에게 각자의 내면 세계로 다가가는 통로를 제공한다.
전시 제목이자 작품 제목인 '바람의 구멍'은 생명의 숨결과 상호 교류, 신성한 소통의 의미를 담고 있다. 이는 잉가 부족의 현자였던 작가의 아버지가 달라이 라마와 만나 입으로 바람을 불어넣으며 '치유'의 경험을 선보였던 것에서 비롯된 용어이다. 작가는 창조주와도 같은 두 현자가 생명의 숨결을 불어넣어 살아 있는 존재를 만드는 이 신성한 기억을 추상적으로 재현하여 보는 이에게 생명의 근원과 존재 그리고 인간적 만남에 관한 성찰적 순간을 선사한다. 생동감 넘치는 색채와 역동적인 필치에서 드러나는 생(生)의 에너지 또한 이차원 회화 속에서 뚜렷한 입체감을 드러낸다.
동 전시는 서양 현대 예술과 남미 선조들의 전통 그리고 각 지식 체계의 통합의 의미를 담고 있다는 것에도 중요한 의의가 있다. 원초적인 자연의 색채, 빛과 움직임을 현대적 미술 기법으로 표현한 독창적인 추상 유화는 선조들의 유산과 미래의 연결을 지속하려는 작가의 의지를 표상한다. 그에게 인간과 자연, 고대와 현대는 대비되는 개념이 아닌 상호연관적 차원에서 바라봐야 하는 것이다. 이분법적인 구분을 해체하는 예술 실천을 통한 하까나미호이의 포스트모던적 경향은 미국, 유럽, 아프리카 사람들의 문화와 전통이 융합되고 상호작용하며 다양한 정체성을 존중하는 콜롬비아라는 국가와도 밀접하게 연결된다. 그에 따라 동 전시는 새로운 문화에의 개방, 상호 이해, 자연과의 조화 등 현 시대에 그 어느때보다 중요해진 가치들을 일깨우고자 한다. 하까나미호이의 작업은 관람객으로 하여금 작가의 예술만이 아니라 세계를 보는 관람자 각자의 고유한 시각적 탐험을 장려하고 콜롬비아에 관한 새롭고 더 나은 이해를 할 수 있도록 이끌 것이다.
전시는 콜롬비아와 한국 양국 간 문화 교류를 한층 깊어지게 하는 기회가 될 것이며, 동시에 팬데믹으로 지친 많은 이들이 하까나미호이의 경이로운 예술을 통해 마음의 위로를 받는 계기를 마련할 것이다.
The Holes in the Wind exhibition-hosted from April 20 to June 1, 2021, by the Korea Foundation in collaboration with the Colombian Embassy to Koreapresents for the very first time in Korea the wonderful abstract paintings of world-renowned artist Carlos Jacanamijoy, of the indigenous Inga people of Colombia.
Audiences are able to enjoy this exhibition both in-person at the KF Gallery and virtually via the KF's website. The exhibition provides visitors and viewers with an opportunity to experience the marvelous encounter of Colombia's stunning natural landscape and beautiful traditions with contemporary art in the large-scale abstract paintings of Carlos Jacanamijoy, thereby enhancing their understanding of Colombia.
Carlos Jacanamijoy was born in 1964 within the Inga indigenous community, which descended from communities that were part of the Inca empire, in Santiago, Colombia. Sibundoy valley, his hometown, is an alpine area that is well known for its biodiversity. Here, the Inga people live by practicing the wisdom of their ancestors who respected shamans and nature based on their traditional worldviews. Colombia's abundant nature is the key to Carlos Jacanamijoy's art world and the origin of his spirit. With his abstract language, Jacanamijoy presents the relationships between nature, humans, and the universe as well as people's consciousness, dreams, and realities as synesthesia, and, in doing so, provides viewers with a pathway to their own inner world.
"Holes in the Wind," the title of both this exhibition and one of the featured artworks, carries the meanings of the breath of life, mutual exchange, and divine communication. It is based on the memory of the artist's father, an Inga shaman, his encounter with the Dalai Lama, and how the two sages healed one another by blowing air through their mouths. The abstract representation of the divine memory of the two wise men, considered god-like as they gave life to living creatures, allows visitors and viewers a moment of reflection on the origins and existence of life and human encounters. The energy of life, expressed with vivid colors and dynamic brush strokes, also reveals a three-dimensional effect in the artist's two-dimensional painting.
The exhibition is also meaningful in that it contains aspects of western contemporary art and traditions of South American ancestors, thus integrating two knowledge systems. The unique style of his abstract oil paintings, which depict Colombia's luscious nature and its color, light, and movement with modern art techniques, represents the artist's intention to continue connecting the legacy of his ancestors with the future. For him, humans and nature, as well as the ancient and modern, do not represent contrasting concepts but interrelated aspects that should be explored from numerous perspectives. Carlos Jacanamijoy's postmodern thinking, as evident by his attempt to break down this dichotomy, is closely related to his native Colombia, a melting pot of cultures and traditions from the Americas, Europe, and Africa, whose people treasure their country's diversity. This exhibition thus seeks to awaken in viewers the appreciation of the ever-growing importance of openness to other cultures, mutual understanding, and harmony with nature. Jacanamijoy's works allow visitors and viewers to explore his as well as their own ways of seeing the world, and to gain a new and better understanding of Colombia.
This exhibition serves as an opportunity to deepen cultural exchanges between Colombia and Korea, and for people in Korea to enjoy Jacanamijoy's wonderful artwork to lift the spirits of people feeling worn out by the pandemic.
