[Fellowship] Graduate Studies Fellowship for Foreign Students in Korea 2008

The Korea Foundation implements the Graduate Studies Fellowship for Foreign Students in Korea. This year's application deadline is January 15, 2008. The review results will be announced during mid-February at the Foundation's web site. Please find more information below. [Graduate Studies Fellowship for Foreign Students in Korea] Program ive This program is designed to foster a young generation of Korean Studies researchers from regions where domestic Korean Studies programs are not yet well-developed, and from where it is desirable for them to be given opportunities for study/research in Korea.(Researchers from Asia, Eastern Europe, and Latin America will be given priority.) To achieve this goal, the program assists graduate students who are majoring in Korean Studies with scholarships for their coursework and/or research. Eligibility Applicants must be M.A. or Ph.D. candidates majoring in Korean Studies and enrolled at one of Korea’s universities, or they must have a certificate of admission from a Korean university. In any case, they must be in uninterrupted residence in Korea (as this fellowship does not support overseas research). Applicants will be expected to show sufficient ability to use Korean-language resources in their study and research. This ability should be stipulated in the applicant's cover letter and a language ability assessment form should be submitted (using the Foundation’s form), in which an adviser or language instructor attests to the student's Korean language ability. Fields of Project/Study/Research Korea-related coursework and research in the humanities and social sciences, culture and arts, and comparative research related to Korea. Specifically, majors in the following will be given priority: - Korean Studies - Korean Language (Korean Language & Linguistics, Korean Literature, Korean Language Education) - Korean History (Korean History, Comparative History including Korea) - Other humanities and social sciences majors directly related to Korea Ineligibility The following persons are not eligible to apply: - Students in the natural sciences, medical sciences and engineering fields - Students who are enrolled in Law School, MBA, or Theology courses - Students who are receiving a Korean government scholarship and any scholarship from other institutions, except from their universities - Students who are receiving support from other programs administered by the Foundation, such as the Korea Foundation Fellowships for Field Research or Korean Language Training, do not qualify for concurrent support under this program. Fellowship Terms and Amount Fellowship amounts will cover the tuition and research fees of the graduate school at which each awardee is enrolled, with a fixed amount of 2 million Korean Won per semester. Grant/Fellowship Period Fellowships are for one academic year only. Fellowship recipients may reapply in succeeding years for further support; however, they will be judged competitively against that year's pool of applicants. The maximum fellowship period will be two years. However, those recipients who are in a doctoral course may apply for a one-year extension for their dissertation writing. Application Procedure
  • Application Requirements: - Application form (the Foundation’s form) - Narrative proposal of at least three pages, outlining research interests and academic progress of the applicant - Grade tran of coursework at current institution - Copy of previous degree or diploma - Grade tran of undergraduate course or master’s course - Letter of approval from the applicant's supervisor at his/her current institution (Foundation’s form). A supervisor may not write the letters of approval for more than two students at a time. - Three Letters of Reference (One of them must be Language Ability Assessment of the Foundation’s form)

  • Application Deadline: January 15, 2008 Obligations of Fellowship recipients Fellowship recipients should; - submit a report on their academic/research activities within one month after the conclusion of each semester - Participate in the Foundation activities such as field trips and official ceremonies for Fellows - Notify any changes in recipient's school registration status - Submit tuition receipt for every semester - Notify in advance any plan for travel/research abroad, for any purpose whatsoever, during the fellowship term - Report career/academic development to the Foundation for three years after the Fellowship - Submit 2 copies of dissertation to the Foundation after achieving Master’s or doctoral degrees Please note:
