한국국제교류재단과 주한폴란드대산관의 협력으로 개최하는 <<조화:마르친 리체크 사진전>>에서는 사진 매체가 갖는 시각적 즐거움을 만끽할 수 있다. 마르친 리체크(*1982, 루블린)는 폴란드 출신 사진가로 "눈 속에서 백조에게 먹이를 주는 남자"라는 작품이 여러 매체에서 소개되며 명성을 얻었다. 폴란드 남부 크라쿠프의 비스와 강 인근에서 촬영한 이 사진은 2013년 국제순수예술사진상에서 1등상을 수상했고, 같은 해 허핑턴포스트가 선정한 올해 가장 인상적인 사진 중 하나로 선정되었다.
그는 사진을 통해 메시지를 전달할 때 많은 말을 하지 않는다. 사진 속의 피사체들을 열거해도 그리 긴 단어와 문장이 필요하지 않다. 사진 속 이미지들은 간결하고 군더더기 없지만 그렇다고 멍청하지도 않다. 그 장면들 속에는 구태여 부연하는 이유가 달라붙지 않는다. 때떄로 작품 캡션에서 그 배경을 유추할 수 도 있지만, 해석을 하기에 앞서 절묘하게 맞아떨어지는 기하하적 구도와 순간 포착의 조화를 마주하며 희열을 느끼게 된다. 꾸며진듯 연출한듯 깔금하게 맞아 쩔어지는 구도 속에 작가가 마주한 대상들이 배치되어 있다. 작가가 포착하는 장면은 느릿하게, 떄로는 순식간에 작가를 향해 다가온다. 기다림 끝에 셔터를 눌러 장면을 낚아챌 때, 분명 작가는 스릴을 느끼며 쾌재를 불렀을 것이다. 그리고 그 찰나의 호흡으로 생성된 이미지들은 우리를 다른 세상으로 빨아들인다.
가볍지도 무겁지도 않은 중성의 흑백 사진들 속에는 작가가 바라보는 일상 속 풍경이 정돈되어 있다.그리고 타국인 대만과 인도에서 찍은 작품 시리즈에서도 여지없이 특별한 장면을 낚아채지만, 가깝지도 멀지도 않은 거리에서 묵묵히 바라보려 하는 작가만의 다감하고 인내 어린 시선이 배어 있다. 작가의 시선을 따라 사진 속에 붙잡힌 여러 시간들을 감각하고 나면 현실에서 왠지 모를 이질감을 느끼게 된다. 나타나고, 날아오르고, 프레임의 끝에 다다르는 순간들을 바라보며 주변의 장면들을 살피게 된다. 그리고 자신이 포착한 프레임 안에서 저마다의 생각을 나누는 것, 이미지를 보고 피어난 생각들을 굳게 닫지 않고 프레임 밖으로 활짝 열어두는 것, 그것이 이번 전시가 갖는 의미이자, 작품을 즐기는 방법이 될 것이다.
HARMONY:MARCIN RYCZEK'S PHOTOGRAPHY
"Harmony: Marcin Ryczek's Photogra- phy," a collaborative exhibition hosted by the Korea Foundation and the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Seoul, showcases the Polish artist's fine art photographs. Marcin Ryczek (*1982, Lublin) gained fame outside the art world in 2013 when his striking work "A Man Feeding Swans in the Snow" went viral and appeared in renowned newspapers and magazines in numer-ous countries. The photo, taken by the Vistula River in Kraków in southern Poland, was subsequently awarded the first prize at the Grand Prix de Décou-verte (International FineArt Photography Award) and selected as one of the year's five most striking fine art photo- graphs by the Huffington Post.
Ryczek doesn't rely heavily on words to convey a message through his photographs. Even enumerating the depicted subjects would not require many words or sentences. His works are minimalist in nature and the captured scenes do not necessarily require explanations. Sometimes, their titles may provide clues, but before one can jump to conclusions when trying to interpret Ryczek's photographs, one is struck by the harmonious interplay of his geometric compositions and the particular moments he observed. The artist's neatly arranged scenes almost seem staged, yet they unfolded spontaneously before his eyes, and he surely must experience a certain thrill and satisfaction every time he presses the shutter. The images he creates in those fleeting moments draw us into a different world.
His black-and-white photographs, both light and somber, show everyday scenes. Even in the series of works that Ryczek captured in Taiwan and India, there is an underlying sense of the artist quietly observing his surroundings from a not-too-distant place.
