[Bridging the World] UNESCO Asia-Pacific Centre of Education for International Understanding

[Bridging the World] UNESCO Asia-Pacific Centre of Education for International Understanding

The Asia-Pacific Centre of Education for International Understanding under the auspices of UNESCO (APCEIU) was established in 2000 under an agreement between the Korean government and UNESCO. The center promotes education for global understanding and citizenship with UNESCO member countries.

So what does global citizenship education (GCED) mean? It refers to education for change, providing knowledge, skills, value, and the attitude necessary for students to actively contribute to a more just, peaceful, inclusive, and sustainable world. It also helps all learners, regardless of age and other differences, to gain the proper understanding of the world and boost social skills to become responsible global citizens.

To enhance the capacity of GCED staff, the APCEIU conducts programs including the Korea-UNESCO Fellowship and GCED Youth Leadership Workshop. The centre also develops empirical research and practical policies toward GCED for stakeholders in and out of Korea, taking the lead in fostering global citizens by promoting international exchange of teachers to expedite dynamic change through globalization at educational institutions.
